If I were stranded on a desert island and had to pick three great modern filmmakers to be stranded with, Weir would be one of them. I think his film FEARLESS is one of the finest of the 90's, WITNESS and GALLIPOLI one of the finest of the 80's, and so far, MASTER & COMMANDER: THE FAR SIDE OF THE WORLD, one of the new millenium's greatest. He manages to take me back to pre-1966, when both Hollywood and foreign films knew how to tell a story without sacrificing character. He's a genius, it's that simple.
