Audrey Wells, Film Maker Extraordinaire (Tue Sep 2, 2008 7:56pm ET)report post
by Joe Miller
I love cinema, and I've been a lifelong partaker of it. "Under A Tuscan Sun" has captured my heart as few films have in the last dozen years. I finally purchased the DVD of it, because I cannot stand to watch it interrupted by commercials, and that's where I came across the Director, Ms. Wells, describing the making of it, on an audio track overlaying the visuals of each scene. I am usually reluctant to do this, because it ruins the 'reality' of it, (for me), in subsequent viewings. But this audio presentation reveals how intelligent and bright the writer/director is, and what a big heart she has. That comes through clearly on the screen, of course, but it's even more evident in her speaking about it. This film is supposedly a comedy/drama, but why am I always wiping my eyes at the end? Easy; they are tears of happiness, and I have been touched. Ms. Wells says that she is leery of 'multiple endings,' (and indeed, there are four or five in this one), but I applaud every one of them, especially the old man who tips his hat to our leading lady, Francis, played superbly by Diane Lane. Well, I tip my hat to you, Ms. Wells. You are a film maker extraordinaire. Keep 'em coming!
Joe

Sad Your adaptation of "Under the Tuscan Sun" stunk, and I had thought Francis would have been appalled by the abortion you made of her book...until I saw her clip at the end of the DVD. Both of you ought to be ashamed.

Oh, and this is no comedy, I assure you. There was not a single guffaw offered up through the entire film, and your direction of Diane Lane was pathetic. That's a shame, because she was terrific in "Unfaithful". Had I not ever seen that film, I would have thought Diane to be a really poor actress, but it's really byour direction in this movie that makes her come across as third-rate.

Methinks this viewer has some kind of personal vendatta going on with Ms. Wells, for her assessment does not jive in any way with the final product that has arrived. "Under A Tuscan Sun" is flawless. We hope to see more from Ms. Wells and soon.

Ms. Wells,

I have followed your work for a while now. I love your screenplays. They are so original and fun to read. I my self am a writer. I love to write all sorts of things, but mostly screenplays. My favorite of all your writings was Disney's The Kid. I found it so much fun to watch. It was a great story. The only problem is I can't find a copy of the screenplay anywhere. Could you E-mail me a copy if you have it. I would appreciate it so much. Once again I think you are an excellent writer. Thank you for reading this.
