a sweet little holiday movie
It's sweet without being saccharine and a terrific old black-and-white film to watch with popcorn and your C7 Christmas-lit tree in the background... November 22, 2008
Great Movie!!!
Funny, heart-warming, thought-provoking, and inspiring...a great Christmas story!
Set in New York in the aftermath of World War II, Robert Mitchum is at his manly, take-charge best as a recently-discharged soldier trying to make his career dreams come true. Janet Leigh is beautiful, vulnerable, and very appealing as a young war widow, with a little boy to support, who is being courted by a successful attorney (Wendell Corey) she likes but doesn't love.
Mitchum and Leigh's lives intersect at the department store where he works, and where she is "shopping" as a spy for a rival store. He realizes what she's doing, but fails to report her as required, and is fired. What follows is a hilarious -- and sometimes very serious -- series of encounters between them, as Mitchum realizes he cares for her, and she comes to realize that romance and passion in her life didn't have to end when her beloved husband was killed in the war.
There are some very bold scenes in this movie (by 1949 standards) and some hysterically funny moments as well. (Look for a young Harry Morgan -- Colonel Potter in MASH -- as a perplexed police lieutenant in a very funny scene.) The viewer also gets a real sense of what it was like to live in New York City in those days. (On Christmas morning, a little girl shows Mitchum the roller skates Santa brought her. Roller skates were the standard Christmas present social services agencies gave to children whose families were on welfare.)
In addition to Mitchum, Leigh, and Corey, the supporting cast of this film is very strong too, portraying decent people doing the right thing, who are trying to put the war behind them, move on with their lives, and enjoy Christmas with those they love.
Holiday Affair is heartwarming and funny...with a serious lesson about life, love, and making every moment count. Enjoy!

Fantastic Christmas Movie..!!
Mitchum has been discharged from the Army after serving in WW2. He takes a job as a toy salesman in a department store to raise enough money for train fare to Calif. where he plans to build boats. He meets Leigh who is employed as a comparison shopper for another store. She has a son about 6 years old and is engaged to Wendell Cory. Problems arise and Mitchum is fired from his job. Without giving away the complete plot, the gist of the story is.... does she want to stay in New York with Cory or go to Calif with Mitchum? Wonderfully funny in places and sad as only a love story can be. I have been waiting YEARS for this to come out on DVD. I hope it is the right one. July 23, 2008
