I have never read any of the works of Jhumpa Lahiri. But I enjoy listening to writers speak about their writing. Lahiri is a very intense serious person. She speaks about a new book of short- stories which are centered on something she says she has not written about in such a deep way before, family situations. Charlie Rose is very good emotionally in bringing her to speak here, for she is obviously very restrained person who prefers the words on the page to speak for her. She is asked about the lack of suspense in her writing, and says she may not have the usual suspense but hopes that the reader is curious enough about what will appear next on the page to keep going. She says that writing for her enables her to go deeper in asking the questions she has about life. She says she will always have questions but hopes she is not the kind of person who questions life out of existence. She speaks about the loss of her husband's parents and says she all the time lives in anxiety about something happening which will not enable daily life to continue in an ordinary way.
A low- key absorbing conversation. June 2, 2008
