"Saving the World One Gay at a time"
Amos Lassen
Having just returned from an exhausting gay weekend in Memphis, I decided last night that I needed some light entertainment. As I opened my mail, I found just what I needed--a light comedy that was pure fun. "Chris and John to the Rescue" (Alluvial Filmworks) is a delightful movie that can be best described as a fun time. It has adventure; it is filled with laughs and has two cute boys, Chris Carter and John Simpson. They take a good look at our culture. The movie is a DVD compilation of the Canadian comedy/reality show of the same name.
Chris and John are self-proclaimed culture aficionados whose aim it is to help their fellow man (or men, as the case may be). Their activities run the gamut of GLBT life--searching for the perfect "fag hag", exploring the bear community, setting up a gay teenager on a date, helping a wannabe Broadway star and several other adventures.
There is also a stable of regulars on the shows and they include Scum, Brian Doyle and the fag hags. They do not always succeed in finding remedies for the problems of our community but they do have a lot of fun trying. There is an episode entitled " Gay Me Over" and another about gay babysitting and one about gay camp counselors. The boys manage to rescue Brennan, a university student who has just emerged from the closet and has no idea about gay life. They then meet Jamie who is a gay teen bachelor and very available but who has no idea what love is all about. The boys set him up on a date and the rest is just great fun to watch. In the episode entitled "Save My Pride", the boys meet Adam who is the coordinator of Gay Pride in a small town but has no idea of how to deal with raising money. Their plan to find a solution does not pan out as planned. Then the boys visit "Xtra Magazine" and discover that there is no one available to write an article about the Bear community. Here again their plans do not quite pay off but it is great fun watching their attempt to gain headway with the bears. The boys do, however, manage to save Christmas. They meet a living "Scrooge" who is at odds with his boyfriend who adores the holiday. In "Make Me a Star", Chris and John help Brian Doyle by giving him a quick course in what being a star entails. Finally the boys become camp counselors at a camp for children of gay and lesbian parents.
The extras are also wonderful. There are deleted scenes and a look behind the scenes, blooper real and audio commentaries.
The entire DVD is hilarious and very well done. Watching the boys made mistakes in their attempts to help others is just good fun and deserves to be seen.
