But honestly, "Lipstick Jungle" is great on its own merit! The show's major strength lies in its leading ladies. All three actresses make their characters - and their relationships - believable. Their chemistry lends itself to the audience and you can see why their friendship works.
I also really liked how the show focused on the women's careers. While the ladies of "Sex and the City" had powerful careers, not much time was spent on that aspect of their lives. "Lipstick Jungle," on the other hand, weaves its storylines around the women's jobs (instead of the men they love). It was refreshing to see such strong female characters talk about things beside their romantic entanglements.
On the downside, some of the plot lines lacked originality and pizazz. Sometimes it felt as though the writers were going for "hip" or "scandalous" scenarios (i.e. threesomes) that just fell flat. These situations didn't work because they were too tame and, more importantly, other shows went there...years ago.
For the most part, however, "Lipstick Jungle" is a solid show. It has everything successful TV needs: good acting, believable characters, and interesting stories.
One word of caution: the DVD only features seven episodes, so it would be cost efficient to rent or wait until the price drops a bit. You can also watch the episodes (with limited commercials) on NBC's website for free. Check it out! June 24, 2008
