About Those Daring Young Men In Their Jaunty Jalopies

Screen legend Tony Curtis leads an all-star international cast in this hilarious, romantic and action-packed romp! Set in glorious Monte Carlo, this hugely entertaining follow-up to Those Magnificent Men in Their Flying Machines follows the dashing Schofield (Curtis) as he teams up with the scheming Sir Cuthbert Ware-Armitage (Terry-Thomas) in a zany, winner-take-all car rally beset with scheming competitors, treacherous cliffs - and a very beguiling blonde (Susan Hampshire.) rating: 5 QuoteOne of the best slapstick comedies finally on DVDQuote
I've been waiting for years for this to be released on DVD. The old VHS tapes were getting worse every year. This is one of my favorite classic 60s slapstick comedies. Goes together with "The great race", "Those magnificent men in their flying machines" and others.
Brilliant set of actors, fun (slapstick comedy) plot, lots of action - perfect family feature. Peter Cook and Dudley Moore play together as in so many of their movies - just fantastic. Then of course, there's Tony Curtis, Gerd Froebe and Terry-Thomas.
The transfer of the DVD is OKish, good, but not as good as it could have been. It's nowhere near as good as some modern transfers, but maybe the original film material isn't in such prime condition anymore (there's one particular scene where you can see obvious film damage). Nevertheless, since I consider this to be one of the reference slapstick comedy movies, I can live with the quality. Overall, superb movie. Thank you Paramount for bringing this finally to DVD!

I've waited for years for this to come out on DVD as it's one of my favorite movies. However, I can't get the DVD to play in any of my DVD players including the ones on my computers. It won't load at all other than to recognize the title. I can't access the menu or anything. What a dissapointment. It's not worth going through the hassle of trying to return an opened DVD to Amazon so I guess it's going in the trash. Has any one else had this problem with this disk? I'd be willing to purchase it a second time if I could get a working DVD. August 30, 2008

This is a very funny film with a strong cast of characters, lead by Terry Thomas and Tony Curtis and more than ably supported by Eric Sykes, Peter Cook and Dudley Moore, Gert Frobe, Susan Hampshire, Walter Chiari and more.

Thomas is at his fiendish best, Curtis is charming, Hampshire gorgeous and Cook and Moore are hilarious.

This is real enjoyable romp.....much better than it's predecessor "Those Magnificent Men in their Flying Machines" and almost as good as "the Great Race"

It was such a pleasant surprise to see this one released...FINALLY !!

Even my kids enjoy it, so the comedy has not lost any of its shine over the decades.

Recommended Highly, Have Fun. August 26, 2008

In the 60s, a new genre of film appeared, the "Let's offer them what TV can't" megamovie with a jillion stars, extravagant settings, massive intersecting plots, sometimes absurdly long names, and lavish costumes. "It's a Mad, (repeat) World" was the first of these I remember, but many more were made. This is among the last that was a comedy that I can think of. For good reason.

My wife has had a terrible cold and felt rather inert and passive. The perfect night for a comedy to have her rolling in her chair, if not the aisles. I had bought this based upon my huge fondness for Pete and Dud and the glowing reviews here. I didn't think "Unmemorable Men in their Flying Machines" all that funny, but I was promised this was far better. I was lied to. I'd like to watch this film with that person and see where they laugh, because I cannot imagine what they saw that I didn't. My wife fell asleep after 40 minutes and went to bed. I offered to turn the film off so she could finish it later, but she encouraged me to go on. "I'm not too sharp right now, but I'm just not enjoying it very much." She made the smart decision. I kept waiting for the humor, but as the film laboriously and predictably ground on I realized it was never coming. Terry-Thomas was quite good as the utterly heartless cad, but it was a slim joke that offered a spark, not a bonfire, and the spark faded as it was repeated endlessly. Cook and Moore had the same roles they played elsewhere, but neither seemed very interested in the proceedings and gave listless performances. Susan Hampshire, looking like an overly made up Julie Andrews, was dreadful, and Tony Curtis, one of those guys who I've never been able to get (really, name one good film he did?) was annoying at his best, but often exasperating. Allowed to take his limited talents and total lack of humor and run wild, he plopped like an anvil in every scene he was in. If you think a man without his glasses bumping into walls is funny, this is your kind of film. If you think that it takes a gifted physical comedian to pull off such lame tricks, then stay away.

With more cheap fake snow than a shopping mall Christmas display, silly and stupid characters, bad foreign accents, a sleazy and prurient attitude about sex, special effects from Woolworth's and a plot as substantial as your average Gilligan's Island episode, this is one awful film. When Jimmy Durante singing your (justifiably unknown) theme song was the highlight, and Jimmy was surprisingly good, you know you're in trouble.

(Note--I tried for 2 stars but mistakenly hit the 3 and it does not allow corrections...1.3 is about as high as I would go) August 15, 2008

First I must say that I agree with the first two reviewers as to the quality and entertainment value of this video. Having purchased this for my family and myself, I was suprised to find a "G" rated film showing brief nudity in the waterhole scene. Whether or not this was an oversight by Amazon, I cannot say. I only hope that Amazon will reclassify this film's rating for an otherwise entetaining picture. August 14, 2008
