The First of May (1999)

A "First of May" is someone in his first season with a circus. Eleven-year-old Cory (Dan Byrd) is a foster child nobody wants. Carlotta (Academy Award®-nominee Julie Harris) is an elderly woman the world has forgotten. Together, they find friendship and family when they join a traveling circus, and show "what an old has-been and a First of May can do." Hollywood legend Mickey Rooney costars as excitable circus owner, Boss Ed, with Charles Nelson Reilly as the clown who takes Cory under his wing, and Baseball Hall of Famer and 20th century icon Joe DiMaggio in his memorable last screen appearance as kindly stranger who offers Cory baseball tips and encouragement Winner of the Best of Fest award at the Chicago International Children's Film Festival, The First of May is that rare family film that will touch viewers of all ages.

I live near the DeLand area, and our local paper really hyped up this movie so thought I'd order it for my 2 yr. old granddaughter who loves the circus. This didn't hold her attention at all. There's no more circus footage in it than there is flashes of local signs and businesses and Stetson Univ. The story is insimpid and simplistic; at least there's nothing objectionable in it, but the little boy is a tossed-around foster child whose father was killed in a motorcycle accident. I hope the proceeds of this movie went to help either foster kids or the circus animals and not to help any of the old fogeys that starred in it finance their golden years. June 10, 2008

GREAT FAMILY FILM WITH MICKEY ROONEY!

This movie is a great family film. The story is heart warming. It features many legends...my favorite being Mickey Rooney.
He plays a circus owner and shines in his small role.

The movie was filmed in Florida...only a short distance from where I was living at the time.

If you love heartwarming, family classic this is for you. It's worth it just to see Hollywood legend Mickey Rooney in action again.

The First of May

The Ordering of the product was easy, and fast. The shipping of the product was very Quick and timely. The movie arrived in good condition. The actual feature on a scale of 1 to 10 was a 8.5. It was a story I had seen back in the 90's. I liked it so I purchased it. It is the perfect family video. It has a cast of many famous starts including Joe Demagiio, and Mickey Roony. One of the greatest family movies I've ever seen !!! A+

I watched The First of May for the first time a few years back when it aired on HBO family channel and let me tell you, I just fell in love with this movie. This is one of the greatest family movies I have ever seen and a must have for anyone who enjoys clean fun family movies. I can't say enough about it. I'm so excited about it coming out on dvd and I can't wait to recieve mine. You will love this movie!!! April 28, 2008

Best Family Movie I've Seen

I just watched this movie on a movie channel in London. Made me laugh and made me cry. This is one of the BEST family movies I have seen in a LONG time. May can't get here soon enough for me to get this movie for my family. March 16, 2008
