Average user review:Wow. This movie is mind-numbing garbage that will rot your brain. Name any cliche in action-movie history, and you can pretty much find it here. The plot makes absolutely no sense. A whole lot seems to happen in 90 minutes, yet I don't think I could pass a test on what exactly happens in this movie. I would say that perhaps people who have played the game might understand it better, but I know that's not true, and that would be giving far too much credit to the screenwriter of this pile.
And another thing, does every maker of modern action movies have to use CGI? And awful CGI at that? I fondly remember Arnold taking on an entire South American army in 'Commando,' but watching Timothy Olyphant shoot at computer-generated images just doesn't have the same appeal.
And of course, every action movie has to have a pointless female character who doesn't get to do anything at all, in this case a waif-like Russian girl named Nico, who the lovable hitman is trying to rescue from child prostition, while the only thing the girl wants to do is...you get the idea of the level of this material.
The villains are all generic Russians with names like Yuri and Mikhael, and the plot has something to do with Agent 47 being set up to assassinate the Russian president, who really didn't die, but set himself up, and he has a double. And there's also an agent on his trail. You never really know who is working for who, and why anyone cares. It doesn't matter at all. The dialogue and acting are all terrible.
It's just bad in every way, but rarely boring. It's simply that awful. May 10, 2008
Fun movie...don't expect good acting, though...
I'll start this review with the confession that I've played the Hitman series of games so I'm walking into this review (and the movie) with a love for the character and the world he operates in.
The basic plot follows Agent 47 as he goes on a hit and gets double-crossed. A couple plot complications and a beautiful, half-naked woman get tossed in for good measure...but, you're not here for plot. It's all about Agent 47 getting the job done, staying a step ahead of everyone else.
The movie's pretty stylish and goes around to a number of locations in Europe (two of the biggest draws for the game itself). The girl's pretty good looking, the action is fun if a bit absurd at times (c'mon, swords?), but nothing beats how great it looks when you see Agent 47 in profile pull up behind the body guard of his target or watching him pull on the uniform of a rail employee and "blending in" like a bald guy with a barcode tattoo on his head can...it's the combination of stylish visuals and the ridiculous skill Agent 47 has at doing what he does that makes the movie worth watching.
Now, I can't say this is some sort of heady masterpiece and no, he's not James Bond, but this is definitely a fun movie and is likely a must for anyone who's enjoyed the games. They could have cast Agent 47 better (sorry, while Timothy Olyphant does a decent job he's not the guy...I groaned when I first saw them reveal him as 47 in a trailer...). Thus the one star off.
For everyone else, I suggest renting this sucker first. If you're an action junkie and you don't mind some of the BS that shows up in action flicks just to make the movie go or make it more fun, then go for it. Everyone else needs to try it out before you buy it.

Another game to movie ruined.
Ruined shouldn't have been included in my title. It wasn't a bad movie. Definately better than most game to movie transistions. Probably one of the better. It's just I, like most, want to see it done right. I want to see it done with style and grace. It's been done with comics to movies. Why is it so hard for games to movies. The actions was great. Story...ho hum. I would rent before I buy. May 1, 2008
Total primitive
There are countless errors in the movie related to portraying the Russians. These errors are evident for everybody who knows Russian language and basics about Russian military. I'm not even talking about spoken Russian language in the movie, which could be OK for the English-speakers only. The uniforms, inscriptions, places, etc. are all wrong. Could one imagine an action movie with CIA agents where the letter "C" will be reversed like the Russian letter "S" on the backs of FSB agents? From mine point of view, the movie is a comedy rather than an action or a triller. April 29, 2008
