rating: 2 Slow about as exciting as watching paint dry
Ok... First off I don't usually write reviews.

The good: I agree with what a lot of the other posters wrote. It was a beautiful movie. The acting was ok... If you like long slow glares with few words...

The Bad: Oh my god was this a slow movie. There was way to much time to enjoy the scenery and costumes. About half way through I was bored out of my mind. Then when I thought it was over (ok given the title I don't think this is much of a surprise but just in case spoiler alert) When they finally got around to killing Jessie James I wanted to cry. They dragged this scene out at least 10 minutes to long. But I was happy. I thought it was over... Then (spoiler alert #2) I found out the depths of my error... There was at least another 30-40 minutes of the movie... Yeash if it hadn't been for free and I was trying to fall asleep anyway I wouldn't have bothered.

ps: The two stars is only because it was a pretty movie.

rating: 4 For History Lovers
Ok. Jesse James. Moody. Dark. No heroes. Certainly will satisfy hard core history affictionados. The sets and evocation of the times are sterling. Pitt makes us feel like he really nailed Jesse. Powerful, charismatic, a liitle bit(?) loco. The narration is poetical. Makes me want to read the novel. Affleck was perfectly cast as Ford who at first worshipped Jesse, then betrayed him and had to shoot him when his betrayal was discovered. James Carville's turn as the governor of Missouri worked surprisingly well. The film is a study of characthers. It's not for old fashioned "shoot 'em up" fans. Nothing like "Long Riders," which is one of my favorites.

The one good gunfight in the film was surprising and very realistic. There is no illusory presentation of 19th century outlaws as people who would, if given a choice, chance a face to face gunfight with even odds. The preference for ambush is totally realistic and historically accurate.

The movie is very long, I watched it in three sittings. Like reading a novel, and it was very enjoyable. The dialogue and story telling are not very clear and I had to go back and review earlier scenes to make sure I understood what was going on. But that's an advantage of a DVD and the scenes are fun and packed with information. I will probably watch this film again. May 9, 2008

rating: 4 You watch it for the experience and for the beauty
Yes, it's long, and yes, you know what's going to happen. That's why it's so amazing that this film is so good. It's absolutely beautiful to watch. The cinematography was fantastic. Casey Affleck really made the movie work. What a fascinating character. Brad Pitt did a nice job.

Make no mistake - this is a long movie, and slow. But if you don't mind a movie that takes it's time and settles itself deep inside you, then you should like this one.

It's by no means a traditional action Western, and much of it takes place away from the frontier. But it's a fine film if you appreciate scenery, and long, thorough character development.

I can't speak to the historical accuracy of the film, which I guess isn't all that great. But on some level it doesn't really matter. Also, I think that many of Jesse James' ancestors are happy with the film. May 8, 2008

rating: 4 Languorous and beautiful to watch
We all know the story so there are two main reasons to watch this film - the first is Casey Affleck and his characterisation of Robert Ford and the second is to lose yourself in the brilliant photography. Brad Pitt isn't too bad either. May 8, 2008
