Average user review:An amazing historic drama inspired by real events that brought a great song and a great cause into the forefront, helping those wishing to put an end to slavery change minds, and hearts. An emotionally intense story that brings an important historic brawl between right and wrong into perspective. I hadn't fully grasped the difficult journey William Wilberforce and his friends took on their path to bring truth into the light. Wonderful movie!

Amazing!
Everyone should see this film. It made me want to go out and fight injustice. I think this is the reason God gave us movies, so that men and women of great talent could tell inspiring stories like this one. The script was complex and thought provoking, with moments of incredible emotion. The whole thing was a little over-dramatic, I must admit, but this is good storytelling, not a documentary film.
Maybe not everyone should see this film. Small children will be disturbed by graphic descriptions of slavery and some frightening scenes of slave children working in a sugar refinery. But anyone old enough to face the world's injustices ought to see this film. It is one of those rare films that will change your life. May 15, 2008
Amazing Grace
Ioan Gruffudd does an excellent job as William Wilberforce. Personally I thought he was magnificent as "Captain Horatio Hornblower" so no great surprise to me he would handle this role so well. Fans of "Amistad" will find this takes a different approach at changing slavery. Here we see the interaction of the English Ministry and how they enact laws. We get to see how Wilberforce was closely tied to the Prime Minister of the time. Although the time line may jump a little it still gives a good picture of his adult life and his battles in and out of court including those with his health. We see all those that impacted his life. I was impressed by the performances of the reformed slaver captain that became a minister, played by Albert Finney, that wrote the song "Amazing Grace, and the abolishionists including a former slave that had been a king in Africa. A very well done movie and I recommend it to the whole family. Great quality DVD with good replayability. May 15, 2008

Profound.
I must admit I was turned off by the title. I assumed it was some sort of Christian made film because there was a butchered version of Amazing Grace (performed by some generic CCM artist) in the preview I saw. Alas, I was poorly mistaken. With Albert Finney, Rufus Sewell, and Michael Gambon on board how could this suck? Ioan Gruffudd also showed he was more than Mr. Fantastic. I loved the script, which was written by the same cat who wrote Eastern Promises.
Every costume, every building, and every mannerism feels painstakingly authentic. While there were some liberties taken, the message is still strong. Politics don't change unless the people do. This a moving historical epic that any Yank with a decent mind can enjoy. May 12, 2008
