Average user review:Revenge is the gruesome tale of an ex-pilot who gets involved with a beautiful women who is married to a mobster. The Unrated Cut slightly differs from the original. It adds more Sex and loses one heavy going torture scene. Why?Don't get me wrong the film absolutely blows you away. It's Tony Scott best film, full of beautiful shots and a mind blowing end.Costner was never better and Quinn delivers one of his most memorable roles in his later career. The new Edition brings new Specials (Audio Commentary and Making Of)and is highly recommended. Awesome. Best Tony Scott
Imposible to find here in Europe the DVD version of Revenge, I had the chance to get the Blu Ray Region Free Edition. Movie was filmed in 1990 but quality of video transfer is very impressive and crisp. PCM Uncompressed Sound is also great.
New cut of the movie by Tony Scott himself is shorter but even blooder than original, but's a wonderful piece of romantic drama.
In my opinion it's best work by Scott, Kevin Costner and beautiful Madeleine Stowe. Solid drama, creat acting, lovely landscape and a really outstanding music score by Jack Nitzsche.
Fully Recommended. Score 9.5/10 April 17, 2008
Smoldering Love Scenes!
This movie has everything! Love, lust, friendship, betrayal, violence and beauty. Kevin Costner gives his best performance ever in a Steve McQueen-like star turn. Madeline Stowe, the most beautiful woman in Hollywood, shows that she can act with the best of them. And she and Costner push the bounds of the film's original R-rating with their smoldering love scenes. To top it off we get Anthony Quinn (in one of his last roles) giving a legendary performance as a ruthless and complex Mexican don. Based on the classic Jim Harrison novella of the same name, "Revenge" reminds us that what you need to make a great film will never change: an original and exciting script, wonderful actors, and a director with the vision and talent to pull it all together. Don't Mess With The Man !!!!!
I have never really liked Kevin Costner's acting in anything and I have always had great difficulty in believing the characters he portrays, i just see Kevin attempting to do some acting again. The same goes here. I did view the movie because i love Anthony Quinn (a real actor) and he doesn't dissapoint anyone wondering what a rich, powerful, evil man does to those who take liberties with his beautiful wife. He is nasty, scary, and a perfect villian not to be crossed by anyone, no matter how close. Lots of violence, not much of a story...a typical revenge flick and a good renter. February 20, 2008
Needs a lesson in guy-code 101
Michael Cochran (Kevin Costner) retires as a naval pilot and visits his Mexican mob boss friend Tibby (Anthony Quinn). After violating rule 1 of the guy code and sleeping with his friend's wife Mireya (Madeleine Stowe), he gets caught and is severely beaten, with the mob boss' wife forced into a life of prostitution and drugs.
This is where the 'revenge' begins: Michael sets out to look for the men that almost beat him to death and for Mireya. It is difficult to really sympathize for him when you consider that he acted without any integrity by having an affair with his friend's wife, and that he was stupid enough to do so with the wife of a mob boss. There are much better justifications for revenge in movies like The Fugitive, Lethal Weapon 2 or Kill Bill.
On the positive side, this Blu-Ray version does feature a shorter version of the movie which flows well, and the high definition Mexican scenery at times is spectacular. Plus I don't think I have ever seen Madeleine Stowe look better, and it is always a treat to see Anthony Quinn in action. The ending is also not what one might expect, which makes it a nice contrast to some of the typical and predictable Hollywood endings. January 26, 2008
