Very disappointing. Nothing like the book. Would not recommend it to anyone. August 26, 2008

I bought this book, read it, and enjoyed it. Of course it's not 100% original, but it was good. Then I heard that they were making a film adaptation of the book. I was not worried, "if a teenager can write a book this good then just wait till the professionals get a hold of it." Boy was I wrong, more like "look how the pros ruin a teens perfectly good novel". That said, the portions of the book that were in the movie were fairly good and I enjoyed them - however a 1 1/2 hour movie just does not cover a novel of this length. It would have been very easy to make this into a 2 - 2 1/2 hour movie, I know I would have watched it. It is very unfortunate that this film adaptation was ruined simply because everything was kicked into hyperdrive and no one had time to enjoy the movie. August 23, 2008

Ever since I was a kid I've enjoyed stories and movies with dragons. When I saw this movie on NetFlix I rented it. I have NOT read the book so don't have knowledge of it to compare the movie to. I was looking for a fun, action packed fantasy movie and this wasn't a disappointment. It has the young hero and his dragon, the damsel in distress, the evil king, the sinister wizard, ghoulish armies, magic, and it is packed with adventure and good special effects.

I wish the movie had been a bit longer but am personally happy it isn't the long, bloated Hollywood "epic adventure" it has been compared to in other reviews I've read here. It's a fun, clean fantasy adventure that the whole family can enjoy. I bought it here and am looking forward to the alleged sequel when/if it comes out. August 21, 2008

The only reason, I would "consider" purchasing this movie, is to either (a) laugh my butt off at it, or (b) watch it while in a very, very, very bad mood so I could criticize it constantly to make myself feel better. But in all honesty, they took a very good read for me and turned it into a Hollywood cash-reeling nightmare! (if you'd even call it that) Worst ten bucks ever invested in Metropolitan Theaters... Man!

(below are my thoughts as the film progressed when I saw it in theaters)

Prelude Montage Thing: Okay, uhhh... good special effects, but aren't they kind of jumping the gun a little bit with the plot?

The Chase at the Very Beginning: Okay... this is beginning to seem a little weird now. Score isn't fitting very nicely, it's a little overexposed and... all right. Who the heck was the editor for this film? Don't you think he or she would have just "a little" shred of "sense" to build up just a tiny amount of tension or rising action so we can actually feel obligated to "worry" about this character? *Arya does down five seconds following that statement* Wow; Apparently not!

The Introduction of the Main Characters: I'm seriously contemplating on going home... The acting is making feel sick, but on the other hand, I did pay ten bucks to see this horrible flick, and if I leave now... I'll NEVER know how bad it really is... ... Right?

When Saphira Shot Up Like a Weed and Started Talking: All right... All right!! This ticket is official for the worst movie ever created. And too bad, Ed Wood Jr.-- you finally have a director and a motion picture that can give you, and your cult-masterpiece "Plan 9 from Outer Space" a total run for its money. *snide laugh*

Trust me, though. This movie is something you either want to wait for when it comes out on FOX television, HBO or Cinemax if you have that luxury, or perhaps just leech it off from a friend who may have already made the mistake of purchasing it. For it isn't worth a dime to anyone... let alone you. I know there are some who want to see these characters in real life and in action, but trust me: The book is paramount when it comes to description and story-telling, but this is a pile of dog manure (and I trust you can trust the difference between the two). I did not expect much except good performances from Jeremy Irons and John Malkovitch, who always 'deliver'. I got better than I bargained for: while characterizations are under-developed and obvious barrowings overworked, there is much good acting, direction, scenery, photography, art-direction, animation, music, etc., etc. A good movie I'll see again.

For the rest, read Jeff Shannon's "Product Review".

And no: based on the reviews, I don't plan to read the book any time soon. I already have my own Anne McCaffrey's collection... August 12, 2008
