The pleasure I take in crime dramas, detective stories, or Hannibal Lecter is the pleasure of the *exceptional*. There needs to be enough realism to suspend disbelief, but otherwise, whether it's Sherlock Holmes, or Dexter, it might as well be about Superman or The Hulk, in the sense that *it's not about a real person*. That is, whether it's about a genius or a serial killer, it ought to be about someone extraordinary. Robson Green has provided such a character in Wire in the Blood and other crime dramas. He's featured prominently on the cover of the DVD, here.

But be forewarned. This is a grade B drama about ordinary-ish middle-class people having ordinary reactions to unusual tragedy, with a degree of prosaic realism. So, it has none of the frisson of inhabiting the mind of someone unusual. The focus, in fact, is largely on the Jemma Redgrave character, and she's as ordinary as a day at the office.

So this completely failed to grab me, and you too, should know what to expect. Some women might like the focus on the female character, but she's certainly no Jane Tennison. Prime Suspect this ain't. April 17, 2008
