Various Artists - A Good Year

In a distinct break from their muscular triumph Gladiator, Russell Crowe and Ridley Scott teamed up again to bring Peter Mayle's sunny Provençal romance to the screen, a change of milieu that's spawned an equally warm, often sentimentally tinged soundtrack and score. Using a trio of pop songs by the great Harry Nilsson (including the joyous demo of Nilsson Schmilsson's "Gotta Get Up") as an axis that's as effusive as it is unlikely, this is a collection that romps through Franco-pop nuggets variously contemporary (Makali's elegant "Il Faut du Temps..."), vintage (Charles Trenet's "Je Chante," Jean Sablon's "J'Attendrai," Tino Rossi's "Le Chant du Guardian"), and downright loopy (Richard Anthony's French redux of "Yellow Polka-Dot Bikini"), making room for Patti Page, Josephine Baker, and Delaney & Bonnie along its merry way. Nice Mix

Having seen the movie more than 20 or 30 times (one of my favorites!) I had to get the soundtrack. It's a good mix of the music from the movie, but it does leave out a couple of the best tracks. July 3, 2008

A Mediocre Film, A Better Than Good CD!

I don't think there has ever been such a disparity between quality of a film and a soundtrack. "A Good Year" the film is oh, so mediocre-but this CD is a wonder. It makes one want to throw a sophisticated dinner party just to have it on in the background. I especially like the instumentals on Track 14. Watch the movie if there is a blizzard and it's on cable and you have a crush on Russell Crowe. Buy this CD NOW!!!! June 26, 2008
