| | Mutiny on the Bounty is excellent | |
Was familiar with the movie altho it had been a number of years since I'd seen it. It's excellent. The DVD was in good shape; delivery was as promised. Everything as expected.
September 18, 2008 | | "MUTINY" OF 1962 WITH BRANDO IS UNDERRATED
The 1962 film based on the Nordoff/Hall book about the "Mutiny on the Bounty" is an under-appreciated work of cinema. Aside from the beautiful settings the characters do the story well. Trevor Howard's
Bligh is a cruel, inhuman taskmaster (even though the real Bligh wasn't
that bad). The Tahitians who were tricked into serving aboard the Bounty
wasn't brought out, but that is another story, outside the book. The crew
of the Bounty couldn't have been a better group of actors. Then there's
Brando's Fletcher Christian. Okay, maybe he was a little over the top
in some respects, but more appealing than Clark Gable or Mel Gibson's
Christian. Don't agree? Take a longboat on a long voyage!

June 21, 2008 | | The Best Version of Mutiny on the Bounty, period.
Despite the negative reception this film received during its initial release (much related to Brando's infamous behavior on the set) this version of the historic mutiny is beautifully shot, intelligently scripted, and moves along at a good pace. Trevor Howard plays Captain Bligh as a truly misguided tyrant and commands attention whenever he is on screen. Marlon Brando plays Fletcher Christian as a gentrified dandy, that adds a very interesting dimension to the dynamics between the two leads, lending considerable weight to Christian's reluctant decision to mutiny. Lots of crackling dialog, much sweeping action. Bligh's dance at the behest of Hiti-Hiti is worth the purchase price. A great tale, very well told.
June 13, 2008This epic 60's version plus "The Bounty" w/Mel Gibson and Anthony Hopkins are interesting contrasts to the original '35 version w/Laughton and Gable. Despite the criticism of this film, I rather liked Brando's take on Christian as a fop or English gentleman which is in direct contrast to Gable's all American macho version. Even Gibson's neurotic, almost latent homo-erotic attraction to Bligh was interestingly also. In his autobiography, Brando hated the original, citing Gable's performance as uninspiringly because he never attempted an British accent or create any nuances to the character he was playing which Laughton did with his brilliant portrayal of Bligh which saved that film. I've seen this film in HD-Dvd via Netflix and am considering purchasing this film before the supplies run out. The restoration of this film on HD is brilliant almost as good you'll find in the recent Hi-Def release of Ford's "The Searchers". And let's not forget the late great Trevor Howard. As Bligh, Howard captured the rigidity and the cruelness of his character perfectly and although he didn't get along with Brando, their performances meshed brilliantly (I believe, later on he did help Marlon out of a legal scrape). So if you want to show off the glories of HD or your HDTV, get this film before it is out of circulation.
