Before I saw the concert I loved this group. Now is my favorite. I had wached it more than 5 times and still not tired of it. I even have a 17 Depeche Mode Audio CD in my car that I burned from before now it's updated with the new songs. I recomended it to a friend and he also sees it over and over everytime he has a chance. In the Tour Documentary they said they try to top the current tour over the last one. I can't wait to see what they'll come up with next.

I've been a DM fan since the early 1990's, when I first heard "Violator" and "Music For the Masses". "Touring the Angel" is a pretty good outing, and you get a lot for your money with this DVD: A full concert DVD disc, an extra feature DVD disc, and an audio-only CD (which unfortunately contains only songs from the Playing the Angel album, no others).

Dave Gahan is in much better form than he was on the "One Night in Paris" DVD; he looks healthier, and sings on key to a much greater degree. However, I do believe the audio was better on the Paris DVD. While "Touring" has a DTS audio option not present on "Paris", I found it a big disappointment: Christian Eigner's drums basically disappear in DTS. When I switched to Dolby 5.1, voila...the drums magically appeared. This is an important factor, since Eigner is a big part of DM's live sound on "Angel". Eigner also played drums on "Paris", and he definitely adds extra adrenaline to the DM live set list. "Walking In My Shoes", for example, sounds better live with Eigner than it does on the studio version.

The extra feature disc provides some interesting insights. Of particular note are the interviews with the the band members. Gahan appears to infer that he would be perfectly happy if DM were to reach the end of the line (at least that is the way I read it). Perhaps this is a reflection of the reported conflicts about Gahan's past frustrations about wanting more songwriting influence on DM's albums (and for the first time, he did write/cowrite some tunes on "Angel") Andy Fletcher and Martin Gore seem to feel that DM still has a lot of creativity left, and look forward to more DM albums in the future. One could foresee Gahan perhaps moving on at some future date with Eigner.

Overall my impression is that "Touring the Angel" is well worth having for the devoted Depeche Mode fan. The DVD does a fine job of documenting DM's latest live concert tour, and showcases just how good of an album "Playing the Angel" really is. September 18, 2007

I didn't like it very much at first viewing/listening. But that's only because I didn't know the "Playing the Angel" songs. I am mainly listening to the bonus CD (which is AMAZING). Dave is great and Gore is best as ever!
The DVD is kind of boring, but I'm sure the show was great in person. Just once, I wish Dave would leave his shirt on...PLEASE! We need to start a petition. May 3, 2007
