rating: 5 DVD Set of Brideshead Revisited
This is a deluxe set of four DVD discs contained in a white glossy box with a picture of two of the central movie characters on the box. The movie "Brideshead Revisited",based on Evelyn Waugh's 1945 novel was originally made by the BBC between 1979-1981 for television and is one of the best things they have ever done. The movie is in eleven episodes and totals eleven hours of viewing.

As I saw the original on television, I can attest to the fact that the color and sound of the movie is as good as was the original film. I also have visited Castle Howard, the site of Brideshead. The estate is one of the main characters in the film and has been depicted in wonderful camera shots and color. I can highly recommend this DVD.

rating: 5 Splendid Production
Brideshead is a splendid production, just as compelling now as when it first premiered. And I find the DVD quality excellent. Brideshead Revisited (25th Anniversary Collector's Edition) April 14, 2008

rating: 2 story that goes nowhere
Having seen all the five star reviews, I thought this was going to be a winner and looked forward to getting it. It was a real letdown. Without going into the storyline, let me say that it was a waste of time. I like stories that have endings that are satisfying. This story was not one of them. It seems that all the characters in this story have no happiness. The only thing I liked about the story was the scenery and sets which were top notch. If I could give it a grade, the sets and scenery would get five stars and the story only one or two. Save your money and if you want a long story, buy the Pallisers. It is so much better than this one. March 3, 2008

rating: 5 With so many 5 stars, what more.......
Quite simply this is the best novel to TV translation.
I watched the set over a weekend and enjoyed it tremendously.
The strange thing is that all the characters are odious and yet the series is compulsive.
I related to the scene where Jeremy Irons pushes his non-religious belief on the dying Lawrence Olivier - "do not accept the last rites and stand firm against all that you have decried". Will Olivier accept God at his end??
An all-star cast. A great series. Possibly the best ever. If it isnt I would like to buy whatever is.

Others have stated the plot more eloquently. I just felt obliged to add a 5 stars for something that gave me so much pleasure.

rating: 5 Brideshead Revisited --- A Story of Love and Loss
Evelyn Waugh is well known for his humorous stories. This is not one of those. Brideshead Revisited is a story of love and loss...mostly loss. Written after his harshest critic, his father, had died, this is a baring of a soul. The narrative prose is the closest to poetry of anything I've read and is unutterably sad. This production is very faithful to the text and features a stellar cast (Sir John Gielgud and Sir Laurence Olivier for starters). Added to this is photography one wants to print and hang on the wall. Set in the English countryside and Venice the views are stunning and only add to the sense of paradise lost. I think this was the BBC's finest and most lavish production. January 16, 2008
