I remember reading the review our local paper gave this movie.
He said it was right up there with The Shining.
I'm wondering if we saw the same movie.
The Shining???
NOT EVEN!!!!!!!!!
The Shining is a masterpiece, Silent Hill is a complete disaster.
Gross out FX, a lame story that made zero sense.
Dreadful acting, dreadful script, dreadful EVERYTHING!!!!!!
A video game to film disaster if there ever was one.
AVOID!!!!!!!!!!

My expectation of this film was low at the get-go: I'm not, nor have I ever been a "gamer" or had any interest in video games. I watched this film with a slight grimace, from the opening scene. That grimace's etiology soon changed from sarcasm to intensity. The cinematography caught my eye from the second scene. The set decoration is pristine and the overall setting of the film is perfect. I found the acting to be on point and the delivery of these lines, from a great screenplay, to be perfect. The film does deliver it's intensity of gore, but you can glance away and return quickly to your screen, and you'll have missed nothing of this wonderfully crafted horror film. I know NOTHING of the director, writer, producers or any of the actors in this film: I'm reviewing this film at it's core - A great film, and most of, a rarity in today's Hollywood - A very ENTERTAINING film. rating: 5 QuoteA HORROR MOVIE CLASSIC 9.5 OUT OF 10Quote
Silent Hill has never been one of my favorite video games due to the franchise's clumsy controls, clunky combat, and aggravating puzzles and riddles (I hate riddles dammit!). But this movie is good, really good to be exact. Which is no surprise considering that one of the film studios: Davis Films; helped make the excellent Resident Evil films. This film is a mix of stylish, morbid, gory, and disturbing horror that is wonderfully pieced together and retains the essence of the games.
WHAT IT'S ABOUT: A nine-year-old girl named Sharon is having strange dreams and sleep walking while speaking of an old ghost town in West Virginia called Silent Hill, which in the 1970's had nearly the entire population of the town burned due to a coal fire and is now referred to as "The Tainted Town". Her mother Rose takes her to the town to figure out why she is having these dreams, and on the way there they get into a car accident. When Rose wakes up, Sharon is missing and she goes to search for her in Silent Hill. Then many strange things begin occurring, and she slowly discovers the horrible secrets the town's hellish history contains along with her daughter's history, while trying to evade the many horrific abominations of creatures the games are known for like Pyramid Head.
STORYLINE: SCORE- 8.75 OUT OF 10- The story could use a little work, some parts of the story are things I've already seen in other horror flicks, but other parts are not which makes most of it good and more interesting than many horror movies.
GORE FACTOR: SCORE- 9.25 OUT OF 10- This film can be downright disgusting when it comes to gore factor. Arterial spray, skin being ripped off, people being burned to death, and more.
DISTURBING FACTOR: SCORE- 9.5 OUT OF 10- The creature designs are macabre, gross, and scary. The way the town and all of its horrible contents have been designed wonderfully and really match the eerie feel you get if you play the games, because you're afraid of what will come for you next.
MUSIC: SCORE- 9.5 OUT OF 10- The people who made this movie must really love the games considering they got the guy who does the amazing music for the games to do the music for this movie and it fits to near perfection.
ENTERTAINMENT: SCORE- 9.5 OUT OF 10- This movie is highly entertaining and will really keep you on the edge of your seat and wanting to know what comes next as the story is very nicely conveyed. Gore factor is wonderful, creature designs are true to the games along with the town's design, and great music really sums up this horror movie classic.
OVERALL: SCORE- 9.5 OUT OF 10- If you like the games you'll probably love the movie, if you like horror movies in general, you will like this movie. What makes this horror movie all the more better, is the fact it feels much fresher than many horror movies. Can't wait for the sequel! June 10, 2008

rating: 1 QuoteZzzzzz... *snort* what, what, is it over yet?Quote
In horror movies, there are several different rating factors. Sadly, the only one this rated highly in is the one you don't want to: the cheese factor. Mediocre acting, boring and unrealistic special effects, some hard-to-hear (perhaps mercifully) dialogue and over-the-top 'mood music' are enough to render this movie nearly unwatchable. Plus the overall darkness of most of the scenes (a trend in horror movies these days, I suspect to cut back on special effects budgets) means that even if you watch the movie in the dark you're still squinting at the screen.

I found it sadly lacking in plot (okay, it had one, but not a good one - it was trite and recycled) and with almost no suspense to speak of. I didn't care what happened to the characters. At one point I was willing to off the main character myself if it'd just stop her shouting. Of course, this could be because the sound swung wildly from barely audible to bursting your eardrums. It had a few moments that might have made you jump, were I not overwhelmed with apathy (for instance, the scene with the nurse corpses would have been jumpy, except I spent the time thinking how much it would have improved the movie if they'd busted out into the Thriller song and dance). It had no lasting, nightmare-giving spook effect (though I admit to being a hard-core horror movie veteran, it would take a lot).

I was even willing to give it credit in that it lacked the gratuitous gore that movie-makers now think is a good substitute for real horror, but then the end of the movie was showers of blood and unnecessary gore, which added nothing and took away any brownie points it may have earned in that arena.

The only redeeming factor in the entire movie was the very end. I'll give it a little credit there for not taking the easy route and leaving you with a little lingering air of mystery. But that wasn't enough to even come close to tipping the scales against the mountain of badness that had accumulated. Bottom line, on a scale of one to five popcorn bags this movie rates a fossilized chunk of popcorn you find under your couch. May 14, 2008

This is a B-movie if i ever saw one. Its only appeal is that its so bad that its actually funny. I found myself laughing through out the entire film.
Every time i heard "BURN THE WITCH!", I had to ask myself, does she weigh as much as a duck? Yes, the way they say it would make sir sir bedivere proud.

I hadn't played the game before seeing this movie. The game does have a much better story, even as silly as it is.

Chyeah, 30 yrs in that place even though apparently they need to eat, monotonous long dialogues that add little if anything to the pitiful story. mostly because the script is boring, or silly.

The only, and i do mean ONLY good thing about this movie is the skill involved with the graphics. thats it. the acting is horrible, the people are cliche'd badly. O my big city rich folk dragging their problem here. how do you like that city boy. o please. o ja lets not forget the, o my god, im in a strange deserted foggy town, this shambling monsters coming towards me... ill tell it to stop :D. please stop mr. monster or ill shoot. the little girls acting sucks, but is better than everyone else.

this movie is a blasted comedy. if anyone reading this thinks of buying it, prepare for a good laugh. its full of gore, still is hilarious, but sucks beyond understanding. i think this movie was meant as fan service, like final fantasy advent children or jiggling breast and panty shots.
