ECW One Night Stand 2006

Last year it was just an after thought, this year it's the real thing! ECW is back and from this, it's official PPV to get things kicked off in true ECW fashion.

The big difference about this year's ONS is that this year, The Whole F'n Show himself Rob Van Dam is cashing in the Money In The Bank that he won a few months prior at WrestleMania against the WWE Champion John Cena. In one of the most hyped events, ECW One Night Stand 2006 does not disappoint.

We get to see a lot of old favorites and some new faces donning the ECW flags (even though in a few cases, it wasn't for very long). All in all, this PPV really delivers some great hardcore, hard hitting matches, some great promos Paul Heyman, Joey Styles and EUGENE?!?!?!?! And one thing that you can't forget about an ECW event, is the ECW Faithful because they're just as much part of the show as the wrestlers. Along with some great DVD bonus features and my DVD came with the 1997 ECW Barely Legal PPV (check listings to see if this is included because I'm betting that not all of them come with this).

And just for a quick run down, here is the match listing:

Tazz v Jerry "The King" Lawler (squash, I'm sorry but this match is pretty much pointless and doesn't even lead off the show well)

Randy Orton v Kurt Angle (has some great wrestling spots but don't expect to see an amazing wrestling match because Orton can't chain wrestle like Angle can)

FBI (Lil Guido and Tony Mamaluke) v Tajiri and Super Crazy (GREAT MATCH)

World Heavyweight Championship Match
The Suicidal, Homicidal, Genocidal, Death Defying Sabu v Rey Mysterio
(this match is WAY too short but for what it is, it's a great match. Big spots, tables, chairs, hardcore lucha libre, can't go wrong with this match)

Hardcore 6-Man Tag
Mick Foley, Edge and Lita v Terry Funk, Tommy Dreamer and Bealuh
(unbelievably gory match! What happens when you put 4 of the most extreme wrestlers in match that's anything goes????? THIS MATCH, main reason I bought the DVD)

Balls Mahoney v Masato Tanaka (another solid match but again, is too short)

Main Event, WWE Championship Match
Rob Van Dam v John Cena
This was one of the best matches I've seen a long while. RVD finally gets credit where his credit is due. For years in the WWE, he's been that laid back, cool, "hey whatever man" and "and yeah that's cool" guy but finally, WWE fans get to see the real F'n Show. John Cena also steps out a little and does more than 3 moves in a match and actually has a decent showing. Great Match and a well deserved icing on the cake for RVD and ECW fans!

I'll be brief. What makes this such a great final swansong for the real ECW?! Simple, the final match. This is living proof of how much WWE and ECW fans dislike the person known as John Cena. The crowd's reaction (even ECW event workers) is priceless. Anytime one can see John Cena getting punked out and losing a match is a 100% good deal. The other matches are alot of fun. However, the final result is classic EC(fn)W. March 23, 2008

I have been a wrestling fan since 1996 and have watched all kinds of wrestling. I have a wrestling DVD/VHS collection spanning over 50 all together. This is the most complete and accurate review of this DVD you will find. I hope you find this review helpful; remember to vote helpful or not helpful. (Note-Each DVD I review has a "Match of the DVD" award somewhere in it.)

ECW One Night Stand 2006
This One Night Stand event is different from the first in that it feels less like an ECW event and more like a mixture of WWE and ECW. This event is fresh and is extremely different compared to any other ECW or WWE PPV you will find. It takes place at the Hammerstien Ballroom, and seats some of the most rabid wrestling fans in the world. The show is always electric from top to bottom. Nothing in this show is less than great. If you are looking for the original, more ECW-like, event, it is ECW - One Night Stand.

Before the show begins, Paul Heyman comes out and gives a speech. He thanks the fans for their support and plugs the new ECW on Sci-Fi.

Tazz VS Jerry "The King" Lawler
This match is over within 30 seconds. You did not expect much so it was pretty entertaining anyway. Joey Styles gets involved and Lawler is choked out.
RATING- None

Tazz joins Joey Styles on commentary from this point of the show on.

Randy Orton VS Kurt Angle
Even though Angle is not a real ECW guy, the fans love this guy. The crowd is into this match and eats Orton alive. I prefer their second encounter at WWE Raw Presents: Vengeance much more, but this match and solid. I have always loved Kurt Angle's intense gimmick because the crowd loves it and gets really into the match.
RATING- 8/10

F.B.I. VS Super Crazy & Tajiri
This is a fantastic tag team match. The match is very fast paced and you see many moves you do not regularly see in WWE matches. It is nice to see Tajiri back in an American ring. After the match, Big Show comes out and destroys everyone.
RATING- 8.5/10

Between these two matches, JBL addresses the crowd. He says he is taking Tazz's place as commentator on Smackdown.

World Heavyweight Championship- Extreme Rules
Rey Mysterio(c) VS Sabu
A dream match-up in a lot of wrestling fans minds. This match is fast paced and both wrestlers work hard. There are some brutal spots including the last spot, which is sickening. The only complaint with this match is that it was a little short.
RATING- 9/10

Mixed Extreme Tag Team Match
Mick Foley, Edge, & Lita VS Terry Funk, Tommy Dreamer, & Beulah
Wow. What a match these six had. Lita and Beulah have very little involvement in the match. The other four work their butts off to give everyone one of the greatest brawls I have ever seen. Barbwire and fire both come into play during this match. Terry Funk looks like he is going to die at one point during the match. This is not just random violence though; everything was well done and well paced.
RATING- 10/10

Balls Mahoney VS Masato Tanaka
This was more of a slow down match. The fans are still into it and it is a great match. Balls spits beer in Tanaka's face. Good match overall.
RATING- 7.5/10

Eugene enters the ring to tell the fans how much he loves ECW. This goes on for a few minutes before Sandman shows up. Sandman gets tore up by the crowd though, everyone is hanging and pulling on him. He plays it cool though, gets to the ring, and beats up on Eugene. Good segment.

WWE Championship- Extreme Rules
John Cena(c) VS Rob Van Dam
This is one of the most emotional matches I have ever seen. The crowd gives a reaction to every single move. Cena is hated so much by the crowd. When he throws his shirt to the crowd, they throw it back...multiple times. They do not get lazy just because the crowd is into it (like Triple H VS Cena at WWE WrestleMania 22); they give you a great show.
RATING-10/10

ECW's event called One Night Stand was the last event that showed what ECW was truly all about. Right after this event, the WWE would turn this once great revolution into a water-downed version of Sunday Night Heat with an occasional good match here and there. This one is worth viewing a few times for many reasons.

Tazz vs Jerry "The King" Lawler. This was not a match because it only lasts about ten seconds but it served it purpose with ECW making a stand.

Kurt Angle vs Randy Orton. Orton had some ring rust and the insane crowd let him have it. Angle can wrestle a good match with anyone he is in the ring with. This one would start off slow but it would gradually pick up to be a solid contest.

Tajiri & Super Crazy vs F.B.I. This was one of those matches that truly stood what ECW was all about. This match had fast paced action, everyone getting their moments in and showcasing great skills without relying on just weapon use. The Big Show's appearance was pointless but it does not take away from the match itself.

World Heavyweight Champion Rey Mysterio vs Sabu. This one was something to see as this match had everything that you wanted to see from these two. Despite a lame draw ending and only ten minutes long, Rey & Sabu delivered a sick match with fast-paced wrestling, sick chair shots (one that Rey took that made me jump from my seat) and cool table spots.

Edge, Mick Foley & Lita vs Tommy Dreamer, Terry Funk & Beulah. Another match that brought back the old ECW feeling, just with a few WWE stars added to the mix. This match resembled the Dreamer/Raven rivalry from November 2 Remember years back but this was a fun spotfest as each competitor took some hard bumps for our sadistic pleasure. The moment of Foley & Funk stuck in barb-wire is gross & a must see.

Balls Mahoney vs Masato Tanaka. This one was a disappointment from where I sit considering the fact that Tanaka was injured & was limited in what he could do in the ring. Decent but nothing special.

WWE Champion John Cena vs Rob Van Dam. RVD was getting that huge push that he deserved a long time ago and had his opportunity here. The highlight was truly the crowd reaction to John Cena as they made the response that Cena received at WrestleMania 22 seem like Child's Play. Some of the antics that happen have to be seen to believe. As for the match itself, it was pretty solid & Cena put on one of his best performances while RVD was great as always. The ending is true justice.

The extras are a real treat. Not only do you get this event but you get ECW's first PPV as well which is just as fun to watch. Overall, I recommend this DVD because it was one of the best efforts that have been shown in production for the WWE. September 13, 2007

rating: 4 QuoteVince Wishes he had this type of Brand LoyaltyQuote
ECW, to me, has always been a case study in loyalty and awesomeness. They were the David that, back in the mid to late 90's, tried to take down two Goliath's at once with the simple strategy of giving the fans what they truly want. They didn't want elementary school gimmicks or bad wrestling or stuff that looked obviously fake. Of course the battle was lost in the end, but by catering to this niche market they created a large number of rabid fans who are all too eager to start an "ECW" chant at any given moment. So it would come as no surprise that Vince would buy off the name, buy off their leader (Paul Heyman), and then put on a PPV that invites these fans to relive the glory days when ECW was actually ECW.

And darn it if they didn't put on one incredible show. Some WWE wrestlers litter the card, but ECW's heyday was over 10 years ago now, so you can hardly expect them to put on a show using just originals. The centerpiece of the show is a big ole gift, wrapped in a bow, delivered to the fans in the form of Edge, Mick Foley and Lita vs. Tommy Dreamer, Terry Funk and Beulah. Before the match begins Foley gave me my required dosage of history: "Long live the Alliance!" Funny! And that is followed by some mic work from Edge who shows why he is the best entertainer in the business today. The match itself is classic ECW booking with barbed wire, fire, blood, violence against women, tables. . .everything we came to love from these people. Terry Funk was showing his age, obviously at 61, by moving around like ring like Andre the Giant. Rey Mysterio Jr. vs. Sabu also brought the house down, as expected, but the weak ending shows just how far into the pie McMahon's fingers were. The main event of John Cena vs. Rob Van Dam was also a hoot to watch. I found it a tad hypocritical that the fans were chanting "You can't wrestle" at Cena after they had just cheered their lungs out over Sandman.

But those fans were the best part of the show. OK, so they buy a ticket and hide behind the flag of extreme to promote anarchy, so what? They cheered and chanted and cared through the whole show. Their chants were cruel and hysterical. . .and often times very salty. Anything warm and/or fuzzy, such as Eugene, got a frigid response. JBL played off the energy flawlessly by delivering an unhinged rant about how ECW is the minor leagues and acting all paranoid about the internet fans. You watch a WWE show these days and half the time the crowd is asleep, so kudos to these people. Vince went the safe route, historically speaking, and appealed to the widest audience possible. He made piles of cash this way and drove ECW out of business. But ECW will always be the most soulful wrestling promotion that ever existed. And with that in mind watching Heyman, standing in the middle of Vince's ring, deliver another speech to his faithful was bittersweet. The spirit lives on, but now we get to watch replays in multiple camera angles. ***3/4 June 2, 2007
