I really like this comedy and hope DVDs will released soon, especially of season 5, 6, 7. I really enjoyed the few episodes on this DVD. I think the cast is the best ever, Especially Dana who is really smart, direct, firm and takes control of her life. June 25, 2008

This is an incredibly annoying, patronizing and downright foolish television sitcom that just perpetuated 90's stereotypes. But before I get to all that, lemme just say that Suzanne Somers was hugely miscast. She doesn't look like a mom, or sound like a mom. And she isn't even funny or cute. There's nothing I hate more than watching an aging celebrity who's 2 days older than God try to look and act young. Because it comes off as just phony and so insincere. And by playing these little games, Suzanne Somers winds up looking even older (picture Grandmama Adams, but not nearly as charismatic or attractive.)

I'm a huge fan of The Brady Bunch because it was the perfect blend of family drama, theatrics and even a little bit of comedy. But there can only be one Brady Bunch. "Step By Step" fails because it does not have an identity of its own. Instead it attempts to glom onto this classic series that is famous the world over.

Don't get me wrong, I watch "Step By Step." Because it's still better than the hodgepodge of gar-bagé on broadcast network TV. And even with a thousand channels there still isn't much to choose from (I can either be bored to tears watching that dumbass new Brit host on QVC, the 700 Club- YUCK, or this.) So, I suppose "Step By Step" is the best alternative to an already lousy situation.

All of the shows were incredibly incendiary and totally unrealistic. The kids all spoke in this tv-land, android-ish staccato-sounding voice. I used to think that I didn't want to watch life as it really was. I used to think that I just wanted to watch mindless TV that helped me forget about all of my problems, no matter how ludicrous it was. That is until I first saw this show. Nobody would ever say or do some of the things these people do. Take for instance the one ep when they went camping (another BB rip-off.) Their car tumbles down a cliff and they just act as if this is normalcy. WTF?!! Or what about the time Carol forced the entire family to all go to church together even though her hubby and kids all didn't want to go. And these weren't babies. If we can learn anything from Ted Haggard it is this: the family that prays together does not necessarily stay together!

Patrick Duffy was also so terribly boring. When did someone write that the typical sitcom hubby had to be such a pussie? Bobby Ewing never would have stood for all this "talking" and "working things out" BS. And why was Carol always such a huge prude? It wasn't funny after like 100 eps of the same thing watching her hubby beg for sex. It was sad.

Staci Keanan was almost as brainless (and useless) as Suzanne Somers. Picture Darlene from Roseanne (but nowhere near as clever, funny, intelligent, witty or biitchy.) You know in the early eps she was a smartass, but she was at least tolerable. As the series progressed she got more and more sanctimonious because she turned into this stupid dumbbell that was the antithesis of her former character.

And it was so sickening how they tried to make Suzanne Somers this hugely caring individual. First of all she's not that good of an actress (if we can forget for a moment that in actuality she isn't even an "actress.") But besides that, this also comes off as deceitful and rather offensive. Because Suzanne Somers has gotta be the world's biggest apathetic, hateful and vengeful person. Just ask Joyce DeWitt!

What was up with those two big yentas? Patrika Fasto & Peggy Rea were on like the first 3 or 4 eps and then just disappeared without any explanation. They had no business being on the show to begin with because none of the other characters looked like them (was Carol adopted?) And, they were never given more than 1 or 2 monosyllabic words to utter. They were simply relegated to very brief, walk-on roles; not unlike what wound up happening to Jenilee on 3's Company (I wonder what Suzanne thinks of that one?) It's apparent that they were hired to make 50-something Suzanne Somers appear 30-something. I suppose it's a tragic case of the Ethel-Mertz-Syndrome, although Suzanne's no Lucille Ball.

The only person on this show that I enjoyed was Sasha Mitchell. Cody was so cute and funny. Wasn't he in those kickboxing movies? It would have been so funny if he would have given Suzanne Somers a karate chop across the face. Incidentally, didn't she get him fired because he smacked his wife around?

And Sasha was replaced with back-from-the-dead Bronson Pinchot. Who's bright idea was this? There were many hugely untalented people on this program but none of them (not even Suzanne Somers) were as repugnant, obnoxious or as utterly monotonous as Bronson Pinchot. The character was only there because the entire series was so completely trivial and worthless. Who wrote for this show, a pack of lobotomized chimps?

Who owns the rights to this, Warner Bros.? Whoever it is, please do everyone a favor and don't release this entire series on DVD. Take my advice Warners b/c it's just not worth it. You see, your customer are f-i-c-k-l-e. Just look at some of the reviews on this site. They say they want full series sets and then when they get 'em they just find something else to scream about b/c no one's ever happy. BTW I only and always rate the content based on the original theatrical performances; I couldn't care less if the DVD has extra-special HD features or anything else. (Nor do I care if the eps are the syndicated version.) Instead, why don't you use all that money to market, sell and distribute this series to improve your current TV roster so viewers (like me!) aren't forced to otherwise watch the effluent that is "Step By Step!"
