About Mutant

Wonderfully cheesy 1982 Alien rip-off produced by Roger Corman. The members of a genetic research team are threatened by a hideous organism of their creation...a man-eating creature, capable of changing its organic structure as it grows and matures. Nice amounts of sci-fi gore and nudity make this Corman produced film a true guilty pleasure. Stars June Chadwick, Dawn Dunlap and Jesse Vint. Product Description

This is my first attempt at writing a review for a movie online, but based on all of the negative opinions you'll find about this movie in other sources, I was moved to find a few words to defend this cinematic masterpiece. It seems obvious that the people who choose to vomit forth negative thoughts about this film haven't actually seen it, but instead, have merely scanned through it under the assumption that it was a wretched heap of space garbage. If you notice, every poor review revolves around the fact that this movie contains clips from other movies, and used set-pieces from those movies as well. These are not the trademarks of a bad movie, just the trademarks of a low budget. Mutant/Forbidden World rises straight out of those ashes and evolves into a very complex movie with all the trappings of a brilliantly entertaining horror/science fiction treat.

Every character is given appropriate air time, and you'll notice that every actor is actually quite good. There isn't a single stiff generic character padding out the run time in this one. Jesse Vint (Welcome To Arrow Beach / Tenderflesh) is perfectly cast here in the role of Mike Colby, and his interaction with the other characters is as well scripted as any other movie from this genre. The female leads Dawn Dunlap and June Chadwick are both attractive and charismatic, and they handle their dialogue better than the stereotypical female roles of any related genre movie. The sexual tension between these two comes off as the most realistic I've seen, when other movies attempting this appear cheesy and predictable.

Being a horror fan, I am still amazed at the amount of gore, and the quality of the special effects. This is not a run of the mill Alien rip-off, but a top-notch horror film with everything you could ask for, and then some.

Do yourself a favor and track down this classic. I'm sure the majority of people who might be reading this saw Mutant/Forbidden World when it was released to theaters, or caught it on a movie channel over 2 decades ago, and have wondered why it wasn't released on DVD. Don't be discouraged by the negative reviews floating around; this movie is every bit as good as you remember it.

The DVD itself is PAL format, so you'll need a region free player to view it. The DVD quality is excellent; the print is uncut and looks crystal clear in comparison to my VHS copy. As a bonus feature, the entire soundtrack is included, which many reviewers have poked fun at, but I feel that this is a really cool feature. If you enjoy atmospheric "horror" music from bands such as GOBLIN, then you will probably enjoy this soundtrack just as much as I do. Honestly, I have always felt the soundtrack to be a strong point of any horror film, and the better ones really stand head and shoulders above the rest. The name of the composer eludes me at the moment, but she did a great job with this soundtrack, and I was pleasantly surprised to find it on here in its complete form.

Excellent release of a great movie! February 23, 2007
