I can't begin to say how much pleasure this album has given me over the years. The extraordinary pairing of Harry Nilsson and arranger Gordon Jenkins makes for a record that I still find amazing even after dozens of listens. Gordon Jenkins is a master arranger (mostly for Sinatra)and he created orchestrations that perfectly compliment Harry's voice (even the keys are just right). Harry was obviously inspired by what was going on behind him as his singing is virtuoso.
The remastering adds a bit of clarity in the vocals and the orchestra balance is an improvment over the original CD release.
This album is a timeless classic and if you love the tin pan alley / American songbook, then this is a disc for you. November 13, 2008

I was aware of Harry Nilsson from the beginning of his career. He was way ahead of the curve and somewhat misunderstood and underappreciated in his time.

Rod Stewart, especially, has mined what we call the "Great American Songbook" in 4 albums; Barry Manilow and other have done that in recent years, too... rediscover these songwriters who toiled in the 20s, 30 & 40s.

Well, Nilsson was the first of the rock n roll era musicians to record an album of standards. When it first came out, it was a complete departure from his previous work, and as such, was not particularly well received at the time. Critics liked it and it was well reviewed, but it did not sell all that well.

When I found out it was re-released on CD, I jumped... my vinyl copy of this gem is totally worn out. For these 20 year old ears in 1973, it was the first time I had heard these songs. Nilsson was decades ahead of his time in recording standards.

His performaces here are terrific; great singing - this is no novelty album. It is a masterpiece. March 10, 2008

WHAT A FABULOUS CD...I'VE LISTENED TO THESE OLD CLASSIC LOVE SONGS FROM DOZENS OF ARTISTS BUT THIS IS "THE BEST"....THE EMOTION OF ROMANCE IN THESE SONGS COMES THROUGH LOUD AND CLEAR. HIS VOICE IS TREMDOUSLY SOOTHING...YOU WON'T BE SORRY YOU INVESTED IN THIS ONE... January 10, 2008

Oh how we miss you Harry. Who knew he was setting a precedent, way back then. Others have followed, from Ronstadt to Rod, but none with such charm. His voice was a good as ever, and his fearless and free command of the possibilities in a melody - enchanting. Sweet music. September 23, 2007
