I think this is a nice documentary about a team in the toughest league in the world.
If you like hockey, you'll probably want to get this into your collection of hockey related DVD's. March 26, 2007
| GREAT!!!! Excellent insight into minor league hockey! |
A movie that could have easily turned into sensationalistic tripe instead tells a moving story about a few Average Joe's trying to make it big in a sport that constantly knocks them to the ground (literally). A definite must for hockey/sports fans and documentary fans! July 6, 2006

I had no idea what to expect from this movie, and it initially seemed like it was glorifying the more extreme side of our proud sport - but this is not quite the case. This neat documentary depicts the lives of the hockey goons "drafted" by a semi-pro league team, the Laval Chiefs. For those who don't know, a "goon" is the go-to player when it comes to fighting and rough play - really rough play - rough play to the extent that it isn't hockey anymore. Don't get me wrong, hockey is and should be a tough sport - but not like the Chiefs play. This movie does a great job showing how this style of playing affects these goons and how, in the end, it just isn't worth it for most players. I'm very much reminded of Dave Morissette's brief career as an NHL goon and the backlash following his not making the cut.
Do not expect much actual hockey in this movie, however - the focus is almost entirely on the ridiculous fights and the personal lives of the players. Humorous but sobering, all in all this is a pretty decent hockey documentary. April 17, 2005
