Set in Paris, Arnaud Viard's poignant film Clara et moi is a romantic drama (in the genre of Once) that tells the story of a struggling French actor Antoine (Julien Boisselier), who unexpectedly meets his soulmate Clara (Julie Gavet) on the Metro. He is lonely. She is beautiful. In scenes reminiscent of The Umbrellas of Cherbourg, they sing and dance together along the Seine. The young couple's relationship is tested when Clara eventually discloses she is HIV positive, leaving Antoine reeling. The film's dénouement plays out against Schubert's melancholic Fantasia for piano. Boisselier and Gavet bring a memorable chemistry to a film which has all the depth and intelligence lacking in an over-hyped film like Once. Recommended.
