There are at least two good reasons to see the 2005 romantic comedy Southern Belles: Laura Breckenridge (in her film debut) and Anna Faris (Smiley Face; Lost in Translation; Scary Movie). The film (currently in rotation on the Sundance channel) tells the story of two best friends, Belle (Faris) and Bell (Breckenridge), who dream of trading their dreary trailer-park lives in rural Georgia for life in the big city (Atlanta). Not only are they as sweet-natured as a couple of Georgia peaches, but together Bell & Belle define the phrase "too cute." Their dream goes awry when Bell meets a handsome law enforcement officer named Rhett Butler (Justin Chambers of Grey's Anatomy), who takes her turkey hunting on their first date. Belle cautions her friend that men in uniforms are "dead ends." Anna Faris (who won the "Stonette of the Year" Award at High Times Magazine's Stony Awards in 2007 for her performance in Smiley Face) carries the film with her wide-eyed comic timing and naive facial expressions. She is perfect for the role of far-from-sophisticated and possibly gay Belle (Bell catches her checking out other women). In my favorite scene in the film, Belle takes offense at a Frenchwoman shopping for "pussy food" (cat food) at the Whitey's discount department store where Belle works. Well-crafted on a small budget, rich in local color and colorful kooks, and full of funny moments, Southern Belles is a charming film that deserves a cult following. Anna Faris is on the verge of becoming Hollywood's next comic "It Girl," of this I'm certain.

If you ain't drinking, you ain't parking here.

One of the funniest movies ever! Next to The Big Lebowski, this is my fav low-class, high laughs film. As a veteran of the red-neck trailer park scene in LA (lower Alabama) and Tennessee (I moved up North), I have to say that SOMEBODY FINALLY GOT IT RIGHT! September 30, 2007

Living in Arkansas, we can really appreciate this film, especially its irreverence. Bell and Belle, two life-long friends, decide to Atlanta. Bell is fed up with working in a variety store but it is not easy just to pick up and leave. Her rap-loving "cracker" boyfriend is driving a car that is in her name. She has to figure out what to do so she can get away.
There is nothing subtle in this movie. Everything is in your face. Ana Faris and Laura Breckenridge are Bell and Belle, respectively. They feel that their trailer park lives are taking them nowhere and that Atlanta holds fame and fortune. They do not realize what this move can cost them and what they go through in their new surroundings is what makes this movie so wonderful.
The movie is intelligent because it does not take itself seriously. It pays tongue-in-cheek homage to "Gone With the Wind", "Thelma and Louise" and other southern themed and road films. The writers make fun of southern life while at the same time maintain deep compassion for the characters. The real joy of the film, however, is the cast. Like "Sordid Lives", they seem to be having a great time making the movie.
There is so much to see here--nuance-wise that you have to watch it twice or ore to catch it all. You will undoubtedly notice that the actors are playing directly to the cameras making the film a "shove-it-down-the-viewer's-throat" kind of film and it as if the filmmakers are saying," YOU will be involved in this movie".
The only unfair thing I saw was the over-abundance of Confederate flags that we see. No matter where you look, there they are. On the other hand, the girls say grace before they eat.
"Southern Belles" is nutty, hilarious, sweetest, corniest movies you will ever see it. It is also quite wonderful and the ending is just unbelievable. It doesn't mock he south, we do that well ourselves. It just shows us as the fun-loving people that we are.

Hilarious-A GREAT sleeper.Worth TEN stars!!

I saw this film just a few days ago on SHOWTIME and LOVED it! Anna Faris is at her usual comedic best, and newcomer Laura Breckenridge is SO believable and funny! I started to watch it with a little hesitation, but in 5 minutes was swept away by the film's innocence and believability! It's just plainly an Excellent movie, and my order for the DVD is already on it's way!!! July 23, 2006

Funny and original

This movie is funny, original, and well-acted. Even the minor characters are well-thought-out and all actors are given the opportunity to shine. Even though you may not be familiar with the actors and may never have seen a commercial or trailer for this film, it is worth your time. Much more genuine and satisfying than a bigger-budget flick like "Sweet Home Alabama." May 7, 2006
