I just received this item and I am very happy with it. Yes the main menus are in Chinese, but the audio can be changed into English. And fear not my friends, they are the voices that we remeber as young kids and the sound effects are as we remember them as well. Some may complain about the pouches that the disc are in. But Wen-Wen Toys, provides a little plastic bag for the disc to sit in and then you can place it into the pouch scratch free. This item is the one to get for under what it would cost you to buy them all from Rhino. September 1, 2008

I was a little hesistant in buying this set because it's an import from China. I was expecting the menu to be entirely in Chinese and difficult to use, but because I couldn't find a DVD set in English, I just went ahead and bought it...

...and I'm so glad I did! First off, the menu is not hard to use at all! You just navigate using different parts of an Autobot insignia, and it's really simple. Each episode title is in both Chinese and English, and you can see still shots from each episode from the menu. Picture quality is good, as is the sound quality. It uses all the original American voice actors, but if you want to hear what Soundwave sounds like while speaking Chinese (which is flippin' awesome, by the way), you also have that option. Don't have a heart attack if you pop in a disc and they start speaking in Chinese. Just press the language button on your DVD remote; it's that easy. If you're worried about the menu navigation or whether or not it has the original voices, you can certainly relax. And this is NOT a bootleg!

As far as I know, the episodes are mostly in order, I think just two of them are switched around, but it's not a big deal. The whole set comes in a cool embossed tin, and it comes with sweet artwork (with bios of each Transformer, which is unfortunately in Chinese), and a keychain. However, each disc comes in a super crappy plastic sleeve. I just bought a set of clear DVD cases for $2, and that problem was solved.

Another cool thing is that this set comes with the 1986 movie. (That movie is from '86, right?)

If you're tired of watching crappy boot-legged Transformers episodes on YouTube, then buy this set! If you can get the whole G1 series for less than $100, what's there to think about? You won't be disappointed! August 22, 2008

rating: 5 QuotePLEASE READ!!!! THIS HAS ENGLISH VOICE-OVERS!!!!!Quote
Don't listen to the 1 star reviews about it not being in English. It has an overdub, just like it was when it originally aired.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR ACCESSING THE ENGLISH VOICE-OVER

-I just click on the "chin" portion of the symbol and that goes into a "Play All" function, and I just skip to where I want after that. Or select the right portion of the symbol and it goes into episode selection.
-After you start watching an episode press your menu button (it will pick up where you left off).
-When the menu comes up press your left arrow buttons to highlight the left portion of the Autobot symbol, press Enter (OK) whatever your remote says.
-When the next frame comes up there will be the symbol on your left and three choices on your right, arrow over to the second choice, press Enter (OK).
-After you select that the music will skip and when the cursor comes up it will be on the chin of the Autobot symbol, press Enter (OK) and ENJOY!!!!

This is just how we viewed it when it came out originally...not like the "re-mastered," overpriced versions you find everywhere else.

P.S.- Read the anti-Rhino review it explains their shortfalls quite well!!

rating: 4 QuoteGreat set for Transformers FansQuote
This set is great for original fans to catch up on episodes or new fans who are just getting into the genre. I loved the Transformers as a kid and now I am thirty something and still a fan.

The packaging is very nice and aimed at fans not annoyingly packaged for little children as some of our old childhood favorites can be. The artwork on the postcards and the DVD holder is very nice (even though it is more comic book style than the tv series.) And the keychain is a nice extra. As others have stated, you will want to take the disks out of the package and store them in another case. the lightweight sleeves they come in do not protect them from the cardboard book inside the tin and I wouldn't recommend trying to turn the pages to look at the art without taking the discs out first. It's really just a small annoyance for such a great set.

My only complaints so far about this remastered edition are the Chinese menu on the bonus disk, and the lack of being able to select episodes or scenes easily on the others (If I press stop on my machine leave it on and come back after a while it will usually pick up where I left off but this isn't practical for most people.) The subtitles and audio are no big deal, just use the buttons on your remote or look at your dvd player settings.

The remastered, recolored versions can be a little too bright sometimes or have new sound effects That are a little over the top but those are just nitpicky things. The bonus disk actually has information about the re-mastering process.

The most annoying errors I found so far are in the remastered episode "Divide and Conquer" where they accidentally have Thundercracker escaping from the Autobots at the space bridge instead of Starscream. In the original un-remastered the only glitch was you saw another seekers back when Starscream was starting to throw the tree and the rest was fine. Tisk tisk! There may be more glitches but I haven't studied all the episodes yet.

Overall this is a really great set. I would highly recommend snapping it up before it's too late. There is no telling when we will get another release of this quality. If you are hesitant go ahead and treat yourself! You will be happy you did. August 4, 2008
