About The Who - Tommy and Quadrophenia Live

Rhino Records is proud to present a 3-DVD boxed set showcasing one of the greatest live bands ever-The Who. Disc one features a live rendition of their full-blown rock opera about a deaf, dumb, and blind boy. Tommy was performed live in 1989 at The Universal Amphitheatre in Los Angeles, with special guests Elton John, Phil Collins, Billy Idol, Patti LaBelle, and Steve Winwood. Disc two contains the band's second rock opus, this time built around the story of a young mod's struggle to come of age in the mid-60s. This live version of Quadrophenia, from the 1996/1997 U.S. Tour was the first time it was performed as Townshend and Daltrey had visualized it, with live action and featuring a then-unknown Alex Langdon in a spellbinding performance as Jimmy, the disillusioned Mod.

The set list on these 1989 (Tommy 20 year anniversery tour) and the 1996 (Quadrophenia tour) are very good - I only wish they had the recording technology this good back in The Who's prime but these shows are almost as good - I like the Tommy show better - The Tommy show is a more straight out live Who show where the Quadrophenia one has actors telling the story on film while the Who play the songs live etc.. extra Tommy footage from another show was nice (Giants Stadium) - Quadrophenia is a better recording and film etc ...but I still like the Tommy show better for some reason - I like Live in Boston DVD better than this three DVD set - even though John died a few years before - It rocks better than these shows found on here - the Who are a four man band even if two are no longer with us even - attemps to make Townsends music into boston pops doesn't work for me - he should keep the electric guitar in his hands and put in ear plugs August 15, 2008

Sorry, a big fan of The Who, but this one left me cold. Only get it out
when I feel a need to see the show, but it fails to satisfy somehow. Seems too professionally done and staged. Glad to have bought it, but it leaves me empty and not fulfilled. Never watch all of it from beginning to end... too much to watch at one sitting. November 25, 2007

I have simply loved this DVD, and do not for a moment regret buying it.

Pros:
-having two FULL concerts is simply excellent: it gives a seamless and authentic feel to the band/music and the whole thing is fun to watch.
-great commentary: townshend and daltrey were apparently filmed against a blue screen and their bodies appear overlayed on the actual concert (with the music faded significantly while they talk).
-Good concerts, filming, quite a good live performance.
-guest appearances are pretty neat, with a brief but memorable appearance by Phil Collins.
-incredible bass solo by john entwistle in 5:15. Simply outstanding.

Cons:
-Of course it's largely a matter of personal opinion, but I was dissapointed that all content is from 1989+, so no keith moon. This also means some older yet notable songs were not included. (magic bus, my generation, pictures of lily. No sister disco or eminence front either, though those were a couple of their later songs).

Overall, well worth it. June 1, 2007

I had front row seats for the 1989 "Greatest Hits" tour at Alpine Valley, WI. This is an excellent collection of The Who in concert. The archival footage of the Mods and Rockers wars on the "Quadrophenia" disc are a real pleasure, also. Townshend is memorable, and I still consider John Entwhistle the greatest rock bass guitarist.
