About McLintock!
John Wayne's most popular vehicle of the 1960s is a broad, boisterous comedy-Western and a family movie in every sense--in subject matter, casting, personnel, and the audience it aims to bear-hug. Wayne and his
Quiet Man partner Maureen O'Hara reprise their large-boned lovers' quarrel in a Wild West variation on
The Taming of the Shrew, while a cast of familiar supporting players do their best to avoid becoming collateral damage.
The picture is fascinating as an attempt to adjust and update the Duke as all-American icon. Rancher George Washington McLintock owns most of the town that bears his name, but James Edward Grant's screenplay is at didactic pains to establish the benevolence and socio-political enlightenment of his reign. G.W.'s former Indian foes have become his pals, he enjoys nothing so much as playing chess with his Jewish merchant buddy (Jack Kruschen), and he's tolerant--as his fellow landowners are not--of the homesteaders crowding into the territory. In what now seems like prescience about where things were headed in the 1960s, he even does his best to achieve rapport with (gasp!) impatient youth.
McLintock! was the first movie produced by eldest son Michael Wayne, and the first major assignment for director Andrew V. McLaglen (son of Quiet Man costar Victor). It steals like a bandit from a host of much better movies, but the Duke's great good humor and professionalism redoubtably anchor the proceedings. --Richard T. Jameson Amazon.com

| | O'Hara and Wayne at their BEST | |
I finally own the movie that almost out does the Quiet Man. If you love O'Hara and Wayne together, you cannot miss this one. A thrilling comedy for the whole family for now and years to come. You will laugh till it hurts and watch it twice because you will miss a lot while laughing out loud. Amazon delivers an excellent quality DVD.

A friend let me borrow this film and I found it funny and cute. Although his version the film was scratchy and not good quality but I bought this one and it was perfect. The sound and picture quality was perfect. I do not have any trouble with my disc.
Words of wisdom: "I can't explain it Becky, but there is something that happens between a man and a women with all that growing up together."
John Wayne at his best!
July 13, 2008This is one of the best John Wayne movies that I have ever seen. Very funny and exciting to watch. This is up there with Hatari! I would recommend this movie to everyone.
July 9, 2008 | | Don't let your daughter watch this.... | |
I love John Wayne. I love Maureen O'Hara. And I love them together. And when I first saw this movie, years ago, I loved it. The story is rather standard, but the "mud bowl" is uproarious farce, as is most of the movie. However, upon watching it recently, it hit me like a sledge hammer that I do not want my daughter to see this movie. This movie, like "The Quiet Man", needs to be tossed, as I have tossed my copies. In violent American, where FBI stats tell us that violent homes are found in every tenth house on every street in America, the spectacle of a man chasing his wife through the streets and publicly (or privately) spanking her is not funny! Nor is the more subtle spectacle of that spanking being taken by the woman as a sign that her husband loves her. There is no love in hitting. There is only violence. Any women who thinks otherwise is literally in danger for her life. Do not let your daughter watch this movie. It is NOT funny.

This movie is my family's favorite. I have been watching it since I was born and can practically quote it line for line. However here is a word to the wise: DO NOT BUY THE UNAUTHORIZED VERSION. It will ruin it for you if you have not seen it before, and gravely disappoint you if you have. The unauthorized version is a waste of $10, or however much you paid for it.
