About Art of Spey Casting
Learn the basic and advanced Spey Casting techniques for both Single and Two-Handed Rods. Watch and learn as 17 of the world's best casters share their styles and skills through multi-camera coverage of easy-to-follow demonstrations on rivers in actual fishing situations. Chapters include: 13 detailed demonstratons of spey casting techiques; and 6 Bonus Chapters that include an interview with Mel Krieger; a fun look behind-the-scenes; a casting competition; and interviews with manufacturers/sponsors involved in the production.
One very important point to remember is that spey casting is a style of casting utilized by both single- and double-handed rod casters. There are a growing number of people today who fish in rivers throughout the east & west (Montana, Pennsylvania, North Carolina, Maine, Oregon, Florida, Colorado, California, etc.) who no longer use the standard roll cast. Instead they use spey techniques that allow for powerful casts when there is no room for a normal backcast. In fact, many people today are not using a normal backcast ever (even if they have room) because spey techniques have proven so effective. There's lots here for the beginner and those who already love either or both of these casting elements and want to learn advanced techniques and styles. What sets this DVD apart from all other Spey videos out there, is the truly professional composition, editing, and camerawork--and the fact that it was done out of a love for the sport, with several demonstrators dontating their time. Sequences shot at the beautiful Golden Gate Angling and Casting Club in San Francisco and on rivers around the world.

The 3 dvd set is Rio's Modern Spey Casting and does not usually show up first if you search for it with google.
A second point is that the general notions involved in spey casting are extremely helpful for the general flyfisher and can easily be incorporated into nearly any fishing venue or context.
Unfortunately, it can be a little difficult to get consistent and clear advice regarding the kind of line to purchase as the traditional 4, 5, 6, 7, etc weight system that is used to label rods and weight forward or double taper lines is not completely applicable. One is dealing with casting about 60 feet or more of line outside the tip top guide, whereas AFTMA weighs the first 30 feet. You can get guidance from your rod manufacturer, at least Sage gives it, or Rio and possible scientific anglers, but it tends sometimes to be a little contradictory or not "on point." FYI, there are 15 grains per gram and .035 avoirdupois ounces per gram. You do not want to overload your rod and break it, but if you do not have enough weight, you will not load the rod enough. | Good intro to spey casting |
The problem that I have with the DVD is that it is a compilation of several presentations from different instructors. As a result, there is a lot of overlap of material from one presentation to the next.
The other gripe that I have is that when Lani Waller interviews the presenters, he asks of everyone, "should single handed casters be intimidated by spey casting techniques?" Its a good question, but it gets tiresome to hear 10 different people answer the same question. February 12, 2008
