Samurai Champloo, Volume 4 (2005)

About Samurai Champloo, Volume 4
As Shinichiro Watanabe's freewheeling adventure continues, the pasts of the three main characters begin to come into focus. As an outlaw and a native of Ryukuu, Mugen is doubly an outsider in mainstream Japanese society. Watanabe plays his childhood flashbacks against an Okinawan folk song to stress the character's alienation. Angry students of the dojo where Jin once studied dog his path, and additional flashbacks hint at the significance sunflowers hold for Fuu. Episode 15 epitomizes the seamless blend of stylized violence and rambunctious comedy that make Samurai Champloo so popular. On a visit to the local red-light district, Mugen finds his match--and a possible love interest--in a policewoman posing as a prostitute. She lures him into beating the sashimi out of a gang of counterfeiters with promises of exotic pleasures, then realizes they're already having a great time. (Rated 16 and older: violence, profanity, brief nudity, sexual situations, alcohol and tobacco use) --Charles Solomon Amazon.com

If you've seen Cowboy Beebop, you'll be disappointed by this series. The characters are more caricatural and aren't as well developed in Beebop. Also, the supporting characters aren't as interesting.
February 13, 2007This is truly the first great volume of the series. There are other good ones, but no other volume struck my fancy like this one did. Every episode is jam-packed with action and great story line. Ready to take you for a ride.
Misguided Miscreants 1 & 2 - The first episode on the disc. We step into Mugen's past, and see who he really is, and how/where he grew up. This episode and its follow up are amazing episodes with great action, and top notch soundtrack. Amazing finale, as well.
Bogus Booty - The trio find great, stashed wealth with intension to spend. This is the most hilarious episode of the series, and not to mention one of the coolest. The most rewatchable on the disc.
Lullabies of the lost verse 1 - The party splits ways, and find theirselves troubled. For troubles never singly come. Great episode, with an even greater follow up.
October 12, 2006I completely disagree with the previous Reviewer. Episode 15 is my favorite episode of Champloo. It's an entirely comedic episode that has an interesting theme and an amazing soundtrack to it. The episodes in this volume are great and I'd highly reccomend them. Then again, you cannot just pick up this volume and expect to get a full glimpse of what Champloo is, you need the whole deal. But this is a great volume nonetheless! 5 Stars.
May 3, 2006I'm giving this dvd a 1 star not because all three episodes are crappy but because 15 is such a let down. Don't get me wrong, 13 and 14 are a must see but in 15 way too much is changed within the personalities of the charachcters it just seems like there are totally different writers this time. Episode 16 isn't quite as bad as 15 but you can tell the story has been greatly thinned out compared to the first 14 episodes.
