I retired from the US Navy some time back after a little over 24 years of service. So many of the Boot Camp scenes were very familiar to me. The movie was like a walk down memory lane. Things have change since then but the pride, the honor and the commitment remains the same. It all starts in Boot Camp! I encourage anybody who wants to know what their uncle did when he first enlisted in the US Navy and went to Boot Camp to see this movie! Some of the characters in the movie I recall from my days in Boot Camp. Then the day all Boots look forward to, yes getting orders to the fleet. A good ship reflects the great men and women that serve on her.So enjoy the movie. Have a great Navy Day! February 8, 2008

....Period piece lost to history by now...not a bad production by Pine-Thomas film/makers in co-features a one hour movie before main feature was shown on Saturday's....good looking Robert Lowery does NOT get the top/main billing as colleague Bill Henry gets the nod...he's OK too but never made another impression once the big shots came home from WW2 later...like I said, a rather well done showing the Navy's huge processing center at the Great Lakes Training Center...usual plot...boy likes girl...girl likes boy...then girl jilts him for his wealthy sailor/buddy...not much on laffs but the main theme...THE NAVY WAY...is driven home as boots undergo a nautical crash course on the way into the world's greatest Fleet...for that one reason this movie is a mini-classic for WW2 buffs...Lowery had better parts previous to this movie but he also got lost in the wake of the movie super stars who marched off from Hollywood to come home and took over their grasp where they left off...Henry and Lowery were not the only ones cast aside...as long as the war lasted they had their whirl as heart throbs long forgotten...that's life on the homefront for 4-F-ers then [ 1944]...even Roscoe Karns' role is below his usual standard as a comic relief...the DVD transfer is sort of shadowy dark and volume is low in places, too...Semper Fi....SSGT CHRIS SARNO-USMC FMF November 26, 2007
