About Soundstage Presents: Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers Live

The work of Tom Petty is a uniquely-American blend of pop and rock that has paid handsome dividends for the star over the years. With his faithful band The Heartbreakers behind him, Petty lit up stages across the country, and became an unlikely early star of MTV with some innovative video work. Subsequent releases saw him justifiably included in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, alongside a stint in supergroup The Travelling Wilburys. SOUNDSTAGE presents a live concert from Petty and his band, with a number of their biggest hits getting a welcome airing.

Mr. Petty has written and forgotten more hits than half of the rock and roll hall of fame. This show is more R&B takes and covers which is fine by me. I don't need to hear free falling one more time.
Simply put it's a well lit, crystal clear snapshot of 2005 and Tom in his prime, maybe a bit over. He hasn't aged well, that is apparent by looking at his bandmates in 2008.
I felt like Tom wanted it on record just how dam good his band and his songwriting was before they became a parody. JOB WELL DONE.
Every note is needed, nothing wasted, Mike Campbell shows why he is possibly the greatess "unknown" lead guitar Master that ever was. He is effortless in completely going wild with the most soul searching strings I have ever heard. He never looks at his guitar, just stares down, lets Tom take front and center most of the time, and rips through rif after rif. Mike Campbell is simply the best there ever was.
If this is a snapshot for posterity, it belongs in the library of congress. The only thing bad was the crowd, they were lame. They were witnessing sheer greatness song after song and barely moved. I was almost embarresed for Tom. He is the man though, never been a better rock songwriter or a tighter band. Buy it and watch it while your wife is in bed, it's beautiful R&B songs peformed by THE master of the Rock band. June 14, 2008

Love this concert. Lot of Petty stuff that you don't get to see or hear very often - covers, non-hits. Sound is great, just wish this was in high-def Blu-Ray (would have given it 5 stars). June 7, 2008

The audio portion is very good. But the video portion is another story.
The HD transfer is horrible. Not what I expected from a concert originally broadcast in HD. Looks OK on my laptop but the larger the screen the worse it appears. Most dvd's look good on my Blu-ray with 1080p upconversion - not this one. For Audio only......... March 2, 2008

Good stuff and even better songs on the extra features.
If you like anything Tom Petty has done, you will like this. February 17, 2008
