About Kal Ho Naa Ho

For Naina Catherine Kapur (Preity Zinta), life is cold grey and dull - as it has been ever since a family tragedy shook her world. Between the constant bickering in her half Punjabi half Catholic household, her grandmother's temper's, looking after her little sister and brother and helping her mother (Jaya Bachchan) deal with the family's financial troubles - Naina has no time for things like parties, fun or herself... She's twenty-three going on fifty. She is serious. She is boring. Enter Aman Mathur (Shah Rukh Khan). Like a whiff of fresh air, he moves into their tiny Indian neighborhood to take it over. Helping others resolve their problems, face life's little challenges - Aman has all the answers. Much to Naina's irritation, he insists on interfering in his life too... Aman pushes Naina into doing things she would never dream of doing. He nags her till she learns to smile. He conspires with friend Rohit (Saif Ali Khan), an eligible Manhattan bachelor to help find her happiness. Kal Ho Naa Ho is the story of Aman, Rohit and Naina's journey together - how they discover themselves, find the courage to love and come together to celebrate life. Product Description

When handsome, fun loving Aman Mathur (Sharukh Khan) moves across the street from uptight Naina Kapur (Preity Zinta) and her family it seems that romance would ensue. However, Aman inexplicably seems more concerned with matchmaking Nain with her longtime friend Rohit Patel (Saif Ali Khan) than with wooing her himself. Unfortunately, this movie is equally perplexing, very formulaic, and holds no surprises. Although crying abounds as the three leads sing and dance their way through the streets of New York City, it quickly grows annoying. The songs are mostly mediocre except the title song. Worst of all, the movie is an hour too long leaving viewers begging for the closing credits long before they come. Writers Niranjan Iyengar and Karan Johar steal a page from Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge by dubbing alcohol as some sort of magic love potion. Under its potent effects Shahrukh manages to snare the affections of his chosen girl who hated him to begin with. This 360 degree turn is further complicated by several melodramatic plot devices which stretch the movie to laughably bad limits.
Bottom Line: Watch it if you are a big Shahrukh Khan fan, but it might just be better to indulge in a repeat viewing of DDLJ.

This movie was one of the best I've ever seen. I can't tell you much about what it's about without giving it all away, so I recommend just watching and finding out for yourself. If you like Bollywood movies, you'll LOVE this one, it's extremely well-done. The music was fun and made me want to get up and dance along with it. The story plays out very well and unfolds in such a way that holds your attention throughout all 3 hours and 15 minutes of the film. Kal Ho Naa Ho is at once heartwarming, unforgettable, and is sure to be one of your unbeatable favorites for many years to come. May 18, 2008

I am writing this review as a caucasian-american who has never seen a Bollywood movie before, but always wanted to. One of my co-workers went to India recently, and bought this movie while he was over there and brought it back to me.

I can't explain what type of affect this movie had on me, but I can now say that I am a new fan of Bollywood. The main storyline was somewhat predictable, and perhaps in a typical American made movie, it could have come across as "cheesy". But the way this movie was woven together; slowly, delicately, with many different layers and subplots blew me out of the water completely.

It may not be the best Indian film ever made, and according to some reviews there are many better films, but it certainly was very moving, and touching.

I think what I appreciated most about the film was Naina's and Aman's love for each other. They certainly felt it, and talked about it to others, yet they never straight out told each other "I love you!" (With the exception of Aman pretending to "read" from Rohit's diary when he was really speaking to her, or when Naina asked "how can you love me so much?" as she weeped in his arms towards the end. I liked that because it made the unspoken understandable between the two of them.

The other story I enjoyed is the family woes and how they deal with them. The mother (Actress Jaya) acts flawlessly as a woman struggling with the suicide of her husband, trying to hold her family together, and holding back dark secrets of her past. Her solemness and lonliness just expressed in her eyes says it all, and the way Aman wants to bring her some light in her life was very touching.

The songs were great fun, and the acting ranged from dramatic to comedic. The actors/actresses are very attractive, and the different story lines all flowed together so well, but not to a point of confusion. It was weasy to follow, even by reading the subtitles (which I must do, since I don't speak Hindi).

This is definetely a wonderful movie, and deserves all the praise it receives. Whether you speak Hindi, or English or any other language (provided that there are subtitles for one to understand), see this movie!!! I am convinced you will be just as touched and moved as I was. November 30, 2006

I bawled like a baby! And that takes some doing. Great movie. Granted it contained it's own fair share of Bollywood Cheese, but thats to be expected. The story was good, the cinematography (did I spell that right?) was good, the songs were great, and it had real emotion. This was one of those movies that after I watched it I had to have it. And now I do. I was so excited. It's a good introduction to Bollywood. Not too much all at once. Anyway, if you like Bollywood watch this movie. Loved it and Shah Rukh Khan is one of my favorite Indian actors. May 12, 2006
