About The Wimbledon Collection - The 2004 Official Film

Wimbledon: The 2004 Official Film features the championship runs of Roger Federerer and Maria Sharapova. While beating Andy Roddick was just another day at the office for the top-ranked Federerer, Russian teen Sharapova turned heads by offering a fresh new face on the women's tour, and it didn't hurt a bit that the face looked like that of a model--"Anna Kournikova with a title," she was quickly dubbed. Other moments of the fortnight captured here include Goran Ivanesevic's farewell, the scoring controversy that might have cost Venus Williams a match, and--because this is a British production--Tim Henman's latest attempt to keep the Wimbledon crown at home. At only 52 minutes, however, there's not a whole lot of time to devote to actual game footage, and the camera has a dizzying habit of cutting to a close-up of a player in the middle of a point, making it hard to follow the action. The short running time makes Wimbledon: The 2004 Official Film feel somewhat like a relic from the VHS days, but it certainly looks good in anamorphic widescreen. --David Horiuchi Amazon.com

Total ripoff. Less than an hour including extras, more shots of crowd members than players, and the boring voice-over frequently reminding us that this is the only tennis tournament that really matters doesn't help a whit. A truly pointless dvd with very little tennis. Summing up hundreds of matches in about 30 minutes of footage? You do the math.
Might be worth buying only if you were there and hope to see yourself in the many audience shots. Otherwise, with barely any tennis on the disc, what's the point? Pure fluff.
Go instead to the infinitely better Classic Matches at Wimbledon series; the Borg/Mac 1980 dvd has more quality in five minutes than this does in 55, and costs half as much.

Having just moved, I missed much of the 2004 Wimbledon event. This film, though short, perfectly recaps the event. My only qualms are how the film cuts to the player only during the rallies, and doesn't show the whole point.

And to all of you haters out there, we can now talk about Ms. Sharapova, as she won the 2006 U.S. Open, proving she is not another Michael Chang-esque one-grand-slam-wonder. January 6, 2007

Not bad, but too much cheesy humor and a lot of talking. Very ltitle actual game. January 7, 2005

I loved the women's final . As for Ms Sharapova being the best thing to hit tennis, lets talk about that after she wins she second grand slam , remember Michel Chang? I think her greatest attraction is not being a Williams sister. July 23, 2004

Maria Sharapova is in my book the best female tennis player in the world. I loved watching her play at Wimbledon. She looked like she had alot of fun playing at Wimbledon. And when she won, that was the best moment of my life when serena hit the ball into the net and Maria fell to the ground in excitement and then went to hug her dad. So this DVD will be awesome because you can relive one of the best moments of Maria's live and you can tell and show your kids this DVD and then they will show there kids and so on. All in all, I love Maria and she is going to be around for a very very long time.

Love You Maria July 5, 2004
