| | Johnny Cash makes this video | |
If it wasn't for Johnny Cash, I don't imagine anybody would have much interest in this video. He opens and closes the concert, accounting for about 20-minutes of the show, with the rest featuring other classic country performers. That's the bad news, I suppose. The good news, Cash alone is worth the admission price ("You get your money's worth the first 15-minutes, and the rest is free!"). His closing set in particular is electrifying, showing Cash at the top of his game and obviously having a ton of fun with his performance.
Definitely worth watching if you're a Johnny Cash fan.

Loved this concert. Johnny seems happy and energetic (it's only 1977). Linda Ronstadt was great (Desperado and Love has no pride/2 of my favorites. Even Roy Clark was enjoyable. Foster Brooks also sings and was surprisingly good! This is a good viewing, you'll enjoy it!
November 7, 2007This DVD is for hard core Cash lovers like myself. Just be warned that, of the 14 songs on this recording, only 6 are sung by Cash, with microphone in hand, no guitar. And to think I had forgotten all about the fake drunk acts of the period. (A reference to some of the filler material that has nothing to do with Cash.) Pathetic. Whether flying or walking, Cash brings home the goods, but this DVD is for collectors only, a sad ripoff which capitalizes on the Man in Black when he's beyond reach.

Unless you simply must SEE Linda Ronstadt etc, and can tolerate some other performers' irritating attempts at humor, Cash's renditions of any of the songs he does on this issue are inferior to what he did with them, and many other wonderful songs, on the 4-CD "Cash: The Legend" and the 3-CD: "Johnny Cash: The Complete Sun Recordings 1955-1958". And as for SEEING the young Johnny Cash, a much more moving and enjoyable experience would be the DVD "Johnny Cash at Town Hall Party". Its technical imperfections, because it was made from old TV films, are noticeable, but if you love Johnny Cash you'll forgive him the DVD's imperfections, as you forgive him his own imperfections.
April 16, 2007I just rented this gem from the library and have watched it twice tonite. Now on Amazon to buy my own copy. Could have done without Foster Brooks but performances by everyone else is a treat!
