About Popeye: The Sailor Man
Popeye first appeared in a 1929 daily comic strip called Thimble Theater by Elsie Segar and caught the country by storm. Popeye had nothing but his wits, a funny way of talking, and a crush on Olive Oyl. His fame eventually caught the attention of the Max Fleischer Studio and by 1933 Popeye had made his big screen debut in a Betty Boop short entitled Popeye The Sailor. The WWII years brought change to the spinach munching sailorman. In 1942, Popeye's uniform changed permanently to Navy whites and the same year, Paramount took over the production studio from the Fleischer brothers and renamed it Famous Studios, which continued to produce some superb entries in the Popeye series. In today's politically correct cartoon landscape of talking sponges and ninja turtles, Popeye is a welcome reminder of a simpler era. This special Double-DVD Collector's Edition contains 34 Popeye cartoons from the Fleischer and Famous Studios period, including the three Fleischer 'Color Specials' Sinbad ('36), Ali Baba ('37) and Aladdin ('39) -- some of the very best ever produced. All cartoons have been digitally restored and remastered from the best 35mm and 16mm film materials available. Bonus Features: Commentary by noted animation historian Jerry Beck| Popeye Classic Movie Poster Gallery| Special Collector's Edition "Liner Notes" Booklet written by Jerry Beck| Animated Motion Menus. Popeye first appeared in newspaper comicstrips in 1929 and four years later,he debuted on the big screen,guest-starring in the Betty Boop short simply entitled POPEYE THE SAILOR. From 1933 to 1957,Paramount produced 200+ theatrical shorts starring the spinach-munching sailor. Popeye is frequently supported by his skinny-as-a-string-bean girlfriend Olive Oyl,his nemesis Bluto,hamburger-munching J. Wellington Wimpy and a baby named Swee Pea. Some shorts in this collection appear in POPEYE THE SAILOR 1933-38 VOL. 1. Others were released in later years and respectively filmed in black-and-white and color. Three two-reel shorts from the 30's were filmed in color:ALI BABA AND THE FORTY THIEVES,ALADDIN AND HIS WONDERFUL LAMP and POPEYE MEETS SINBAD THE SAILOR. Brothers Max and Dave Fleischer produced the 1933-41 shorts then they sold their studio to someone else who renamed the facility Famous Studios in 1942. In '42,Famous continued filming several more B&W shorts and by the end of November 1943,the studio went to color permanently. On August 9,1957,Popeye's final short SPOOKY SWABS was released and Popeye went on a three-year hiatus thus moving to television. The theatrical shorts debuted on television in or around 1956 when Associated Artists Productions had purchased the series. They mutilated many of the shorts with their own A.A.P. prefixes and suffixes(replacing the original Paramount mountain logos). New York-based WPIX-TV Channel 11 has not aired the shorts since 1982. They were later aired by TBS Superstation(first in '87 when the B&W shorts had just been colorized in Korea),TNT(Turner Network Television when it was launched in October 1988) and Cartoon Network when that was launched in October 1992. In the case of the CN broadcasts, the colorized shorts were further mutilated with at the beginning,a view of Popeye's pipe, then his full face. At the end,a view of an anchor and the words "THE END". Many of the original one-reel color shorts have been restored with the original Paramount mountain logos and ending music. If you're an animation buff, this item is a must for you.
March 13, 2008Popeye the sailor man. I've always like him and that goes back to about 1940. I still laugh at his crazy cartoons. I think Popeye is an all American stalwart, I mean that in a very good sense.

My daughter watches this DVD every single day... Good quality and a super great buy...
September 26, 2007I noticed some of the reviews were mixed. Well, my kids LOVED this DVD. They loved it so much, I had to hide the DVD in order to take a break from Popeye and his friends. Yes, the clarity isn't perfect, however, it by all means is not dismal. I saw nothing wrong with the clairty and I can honestly say that my kids wouldn't care if there was a problem. They just want to see what silly thing Popeye is up to next. I would definitely recommend this DVD to anyone who loves Popeye or wants to introduce their kids to Popeye of yesteryear.

My girls, ages 2 and 5 loved these old Popeye cartoons, especially the 5 year old who sat mezmerized ! As for my opinion...the cartoons brought back a host of happy childhood memories, and it was kind of comforting to hear the Popeye theme song in the living room !
