A famliy favorite-Where to buy soundtrack

We enjoy this movie a few times Every year for family movie night.
We invite another family, pop some corn and Relax, even with young children watching because this film is Fun, clean and adventurous.
The costumes are good and story rivets even die hard weekly theater goers.
I wish we could buy the Soundtrack !!! August 25, 2008

Family fantasy and action/adventure. It's a great flick

Disney managed to make a few great "adventure" voyage type movies and this is top tier (another is "In Search of the Castaways."

The acting is top notch. The balloon is wonderful. This is pure fun with its scary bits on top.

Island at the Top of the World

I saw this film being only a child and today, 20 years later, is still one of my favorite movies, and I think, is one of the best films ever made. A great combination of adventure and fantasy and an excellent story. This film is recommended for all people who love fantastic movies and historic movies too. You'll enjoy it. April 22, 2008

A great classic and family movie

I was very excited when I found out that the disney film, that I used to watch as a kid over and over again,has finally come out in a DVD special edition version. The effects are great especially if we concider that it was filmed in the 70's. The zeppelin idea travelling from France to the arctic in the middle of winter is both extreme and adventurous. It's a film that you can watch 100 times and still not get bored of it!!! Disney once again has done its magic with the family movies!!! January 21, 2008

Nice idea but technically imperfect execution

The movie boasts a story squarely in the Rider Haggard "lost world" mould with a soupcon of Jules Verne and Edgar Rice Burroughs thrown in for good measure.It is improbable to say the least but as the vehicle for a roistering adventure yarn it will do very nicely

Donald Sinden plays an Edwardian adventurer and explorer ,Sir Anthony Ross whose son has gone missing following an expedition .Ross is convinced that he is somewhere in the Arctic and mounts an expedition to track him down .The basis for his belief is somewhat flimsy -being a map carved on whalebone and a cryptic entry in a ship's log.They do arrive at the Arctic and discover Ross junior along with a lost Viking tribe .The stage is set for an eventful narrative involving volcanoes and romance and ballooning -all good colourful amterial for a family oriented adventure.
The problem is that its effects are second rate even by the standards of its day with some especially wobbly process work ,and today's juvenile audience tends to be quite unforgiving on such matters .If you can overlook this then add another star to my rating

Sinden is fine ,giving the right blustery touch to the early scenes whicch give way to self-knowledge and greater compassion as his character learns more about himself and others .Sinden was a great King Lear in Stratford years ago and -on a massively lesser scale of quality -there is a touch of Lear's journey to self knowledge here but without the tragedy

Its quite good fun but I fear its technical shortcomings will pose an insuperable barrier for some viewers November 30, 2007
