About Mother, Jugs & Speed

Bill Cosby, Raquel Welch and Harvey Keitel head an all-star cast in this wildly inventive comedy about an ambulance service funny enough to cause their own medical emergency. To beat out competing ambulance services, an ace driver (Cosby), an office secretary/paramedic (Welch) and a suspended cop (Keitel) resort to some outrageous behavior to help people in distress. They're a crew whose condition is even more critical than their clients!

Great favorite with Bill Cosby, Racquel Welch, and Harvey Keitel. All in the old type Cadillac and Oldmobile ambulances of yesteryear. I drove Cads and olds, and pontiacs for Schaefers' Ambulance in Los Angeles. Good scenes of wheel hop on the Cadillac going around turns. Also a LA Sheriff Matador burning out is real neat to watch. I owned a few of these when I was younger. I sure would like one now. April 20, 2008

Two odd things about this DVD:

1) It's got some edited/dubbed-over vulgarities while others are left as is....how'd THAT happen?

2) Toni Basil as a shotgun-toting junkie?

Fun movie though with some disturbing elements too, but we're all adults, deal with it. It was the 70s and a double helping of them at that. March 22, 2008

I first seen this movie when I was fresh out of my EMT class. Working for my first service. There are a lot of parallels to be drawn between the two services in this movie and the one I worked for back then. (15 years ago)There are some classic examples of calls that we go on in this line of work. (Of course there are some stretches there too)...Buzzing the Nuns what great fun! February 17, 2008

Bill Cosby, Raquel Welch and Harvey Keitel star in this comedy as Mother (as in Mother hen), Jugs (enuf said) and Speed (a cop busted for selling speed).

The story of two privately owned ambulance companies compete for the city contract in LA. our heroes work for F & B run by Harry Fishbine (Allen Garfield). Also as F & B staff is Larry Hagman & Bruce Davidson.

This 1976 comedy is cute in spots, but does show its age. Cosby and Keitel seems seasoned for their roles. Whereas Welch seem out of place with this comedy

The film seems grainy and washed out. The story is good, which saves this DVD release

I am completely astounded at the other reviews for this film. Given the cast (particularly Bill Cosby), the film description, and the "PG" rating, I eagerly anticipated a funny, entertaining movie. Unfortunately, this turned out to be one of the worst films I've ever seen.

I must admit I am surprised at the "PG" rating. Among other things, this movie is peppered with near-constant foul language. Personally, I think that alone warrants at least a PG-13 rating. Several scenes also warrant a stronger rating, in my opinion. I enjoy dark humor and am an avid fan of Monty Python, Black Adder, and similar fare, but I found nothing funny in seeing a man shot point-blank with a shotgun or in watching a woman die after giving birth. The fact that Welch's character sleeps with Keitel's character almost immediately upon meeting is also disgusting.

However, the absolute lowest and most sickening point of this film is when Larry Hagman's ambulance-driving character molests an unconscious and possibly dying female college student in the back of his rig. Do other reviewers honestly think these kinds of portrayals are "Amazingly Funny"??? I beg to differ.

So, for those who get their kicks from this sort of garbage, enjoy. But for those who have a higher standard of entertainment, please skip this film. I wish I had. I would give it zero stars, if that were possible, as it truly is the worst of the worst. November 19, 2007
