Just One of the Guys
Very much a movie of the Eighties, this light look gives a glimpse at another time. Nothing exciting, just a slower moving story about feminism and romance. A young lady thinks she has been sligthed at a shot working for a newspaper for the summer. Supposedly by less qualified writers, guys namely. She decides to take it to another school to enter it and pretends to be a guy. Although in fact her paper doesn't cut it there either. Now the story centers on her failing romance with her old boyfriend because of her independence and her new romance with someone she was friends with first. You have to be patient with this one and be into 1980s nostalgia and preferably a girl or you may not appreciate it. Worth a rental. If you enjoyed this be sure to catch "Pretty in Pink" or "Sixteen Candles". Decent quality DVD with some replayability if you love all 80s movies. May 10, 2008
80's at it's best
i love just one of the guys. it is alittle dated. but, it still holds up rather well. some of the acting is hit or miss. but, clayton rohner knocks it out of the park the entire movie. he is very impressive this being his first lead in a feature. i actually just saw him in a trailer for a film called, "the essence of depp". billy jayne is very funny as well. another good actor. all in all, it's still a fun film and remains a favorite. Some things get better with age
High school senior Terry Griffith seems to have it all. She's got a great body, she's popular, she dates a guy in high school, and she knows what she wants out of life--to be a journalist. When Terry enters a contest at school to win an internship with the local newspaper, she's surprised when her entry isn't picked as one of the best. Convinced that her entry was one of the best, and that it's her looks that prevented her from being chosen, Terry decides to pose as a guy and re-enter the same article at a rival high school. Of course hilarity and hijinks ensue, with Terry trying to get selected for the internship, make friends at her new school, and manage to maintain her relationship despite her hectic life.
Okay, so when this movie came out I was 5 years old, but I remember watching it on television countless times during my childhood. Just One of the Guys is one of those movies that will always remind me of being a kid. So when I bought it recently, I expected that it would be a little cheesy (it was), a little dated (for sure), and maybe just a bit over the top (of course). I was right on all counts. What I didn't count on was the fact that this movie just gets better with age. It's as funny now as it was when I was kid because I now see all sorts of "mature" jokes that I didn't get back then. And then there are the outfits. I mean, COME ON! A leather jacket with geometric cutouts and stone washed jeans tucked into socks that are tucked into ankle boots? Does it get much better than that? No. If you've never seen Just One of the Guys, know that no 80's movie collection would be complete without this movie. And if you have seen it, just know that some things get better with age, and this movie is one of them. March 24, 2008
