Lilyan Chauvin delivers an Oscar-winning performance as the control freak, Mother Superior, in "Silent Night, Deadly Night." I hated Mother Superior with a passion. She was very cruel, sadistic and self-righteous and very instrumental in causing Billy to become insane and "punish" all sinners. Though not on a par with the classic "Black Christmas" of 1974, "Silent Night, Deadly Night" is an enjoyable entry in the Christmas holiday slasher fare. Anchor Bay did an excellent job of presenting this movie in its original uncut version. The theatrical version nearly cut out ten minutes from the beginning, which was instrumental in explaining Billy's fear that Santa Claus would punish him. The additional footage showed the killer Santa Claus robbing a convenience store and shooting dead the attendant; it also shows Billy's visit with his grandfather in the insane asylum.

The movie has a high body count and the action is well paced. However, the acting could've been better. The actor chosen to play Billy was too pretty. When he was wearing the Santa Claus suit, he looked very feminine - almost like a man in drag. I wish Billy could've killed Mother Superior in the end but he failed. Alas, in the sequel, his bodybuilding brother, Ricky, has the honor of avenging his brother's death.

"Silent Night, Deadly Night Part 2" chronicles how Ricky becomes insane and follows in his brother's deadly footsteps. Approximately one-third of the movie consists of flashbacks taken directly from the first "Silent Night, Deadly Night." This would've been okay if it had been years since seeing the first movie; however, since it was a double feature, the flashbacks were tiresome. Yes, the acting, dialogue, and death sequences are inferior to those in the original. However, most important is the fact that Ricky does avenge his brother's death and Mother Superior receives her due reward for torturing innocent, young orphans.

The Anchor Bay double feature is far superior to that of the one that was recently released by the same company which only has the original "Silent Night, Deadly Night." The two movies should be watched together. Because I consider Part 2 to be a large bonus, I am giving Anchor Bay's double feature five stars. Anchor Bay should consider re-releasing more of its double features as double features rather than splitting them up and selling them separately.

"B" horror/slash movies. Just lots of great stuff in this movie. Killings, T & A, laughable lines and lots more. Plus...a big slap in the face to the religious god of the commercial holiday...Satan...I mean Santa...oh sorry, they are the same person. Commercial Christmas is a joke, and the people who raise their kids to believe in a false and fake icon are a joke too. In this movie, Satan, I mean Santa is gunned down twice in front of crying and shocked children. GREAT!! Plus Satan, I mean Santa goes around killing and "punishing" all who are naughty. GREAT MOVIE. Glad I bought it over three years ago before it went out of print. Even Netflix doesn't (or won't) have a copy of this movie. Too bad, it should be shown on national television every Christmas just like Jimmy Stewart. July 1, 2007

I remember the big controversy back when SILENT NIGHT / DEADLY NIGHT hit the theatres. MAHS (Mothers Against Homicidal Santas) attacked the movie mercilessly, many (most) of the mad-mums never even having seen it! The story grew and became legend. After watching SN / DN a few minutes ago, it's difficult to understand all the hubbub it created. Yes, there's a killer-claus. Yes, he goes on a murderous rampage at christmas time. No, it's not any more graphic or outrageous than any of the other holiday-horror movies that obviously inspired it. I liked it a lot actually! As far as x-mas horror films go, SN / DN is somewhere between DON'T OPEN 'TIL CHRISTMAS and CHRISTMAS EVIL. It's no BLACK CHRISTMAS by any means, but it ain't bad! Besides, it even has Linnea Quigley (Return Of The Living Dead, Night Of The Demons, Graduation Day) as a disrobed victim! My oh my, that gal just can't keep those clothes on, not even in December! So, settle down for a long winter's evening of jingle kills! As for SILENT NIGHT / DEADLY NIGHT PT. 2, let's just say it's a pile of yellow snow. Mostly flashbacks of the first movie, although the last 15 minutes are pretty good!... May 10, 2007
