About Casey's Shadow
CASEY'S Shadow is a funny and touching story for the whole family about a cranky impoverished horse trainer Lloyd Bourdelle (Walter Matthau) and his three sons. When the oldest son is sent off to buy a quarter horse he brings back instead an old pregnant mare explaining that she has superb bloodlines. The mare gives birth to a colt that grows into a strong promising racehorse. Bourdelle sees it is an opportunity to show up his old rivals and make some money in the process. But just as Bourdelle is about to enter the horse in a million-dollar race its front leg is seriously injured. In spite of the vet's warning and his son's violent objections Bourdelle enters the horse anyway. This movie was good for a couple reasons. One it was well written and two it has a good leading cast. The director did a good job presenting the material so people who don't care about horses should still enjoy this film.
June 14, 2008If you like horses, kids or Walter Matthau, you'll love this film. Especially since it has all three. It's an absolutely delightful, heartwarming and funny film for the entire family and Walter Matthau turns in his usual stellar performance.

April 5, 2008Casey's Shadow is one of my favorite movies. It is really a classic, especially for horse racing fans.
May 6, 2007I thoroughly enjoy this movie. The acting is seemless--as if you are watching a real family interact. Walter Matthau is a horse trainer and father. His son, Casey, is a young boy whose best friend is a foal called "Casey's Shadow." Against all odds, the two-year old horse becomes a million-dollar champion. However, the story does not end there, which is one of many reasons that this film has such depth.
