She also realizes she is different. Many of her insecurities stem from her abnormal upbringing. Her mother never lets her forget about her lazy eye. When she forces May to wear an eyepatch, she sets the groundwork for her life of isolation and ridicule.
Most of this story doesn't feel like a traditional horror film. I was expecting more of a gothic slasher tale with some grisly self-mutilation and gory effects. But really, this is more of an intense, unsettling character study.
What makes this so uncomfortable is the way the story progresses. I initially felt a warm attraction to May and all her quirky idiosyncracies. There is a genuine charm and even some sympathy generated as she tries to find some comforts in her world. But this eventually take an extreme turn down a dark path and you're left wincing at the horrific repercussioins.
My favorite part about this movie is that it is quite original. It kind of reminded me of Audition. The climax attempts to shock and fit in more with traditional horror film stereotypes. Yes, it is brutal, but I actually would have prefered a toned down, less-violent finale(I can't believe I just said that).
Still, this is an outstanding little horror gem. Highly recommended. April 16, 2008
| Very original |
What is good about this movie is that each scene has a purpose and flows. It gives you the creeps and but turns around and gives you some very dark humor as well. This is definitely one that slipped under the radar. March 7, 2008
