The Beatles Anthology (1995)

Initially broadcast as a TV miniseries to go with the series of three Anthology double-CD albums, this set of eight documentary tapes has the heft and scope of one of Ken Burns's expansive projects. Still, unless you are either a historian or a truly committed fan, you'll find yourself with way more material--particularly about the Beatles' early lives as lads in Liverpool--than you'll want to watch. The documentary material is copious, including early performance films and tapes, at the point before they found their true voices. The actual Beatlemania years--beginning in 1963 and concluding in 1970--feature extensive performance films, as well as home movies and archival material. The best parts, of course, are the interviews with the Beatles themselves, who produced the entire thing. Along with reworking two previously unreleased John Lennon tracks as "new Beatles songs," the Anthology includes some unseen Lennon interview tapes so that his acerbic voice can be heard as well. This stands as a comprehensive document of that heady period, the second coming of rock & roll, as the Beatles took what Elvis had started and expanded upon it exponentially.  This!!!! should have been called "The Complete Beatles"
I remember in the 80's the vhs documentary called "The comlpete Beatles" which was only two hours. then in 1995 we had the privilege of seeing the the three night documentary of Anthology which wetted our lips a bit , especially with new Beatle songs to come with it. So I hev been in a Beatles faze recently ,so after two years of thinking about this release , I decided this past Sat. to finally purchase this set on Dvd. I decided to watch a chapter a day so i wouldn't cram it all in and get bored , so that sat night I watched part one of the DVD , then Sunday morning I stared with part two and just kept going because I could not get enough. Now I have finished watching the set , and I still want more.
This is more complete of a history on the band that the actual titled "Complete Beatles" will ever be. I will cherish this set for as long as I live. April 28, 2008

 Beatles Anthology Review
This series was done under the supervision of the surviving Beatles at the time (mid 90's) and is basically the story of The Beatles from their perspective. There are lots of interviews with Paul, George, and Ringo with footage from interviews with John. There is a lot of insight into why things happened the way they did. (i.e. their decision to stop touring, Brian Epstein's death, etc.) It starts from their Liverpool roots and follows their fame to Abbey Road. There is lots of excellent footage and I was particularly pleased that they included the "videos" that the band created some twenty years ahead of MTV. Because of the involvment of the surviving Beatles in the production, some of the conflict that happened within the band isn't mentioned or is mentioned briefly. The strongest things about this series are the interviews and the music. I highly recommend it, especially if you're a Beatles fan. March 31, 2008
