About North Shore

The dialogue is laughable, and the plot is by the numbers. But if you're a surfer (or an armchair surfer), this ultra-silly movie may prove hard to resist. It's the one about the kid from Arizona (Matt Adler), who's surfed only on artificial waves in that landlocked state, coming out to spend his last free summer hitting the serious water of Hawaii. He falls in with a mystical surf guru (Gregory Harrison), one of those surf-Zen masters obsessed with the cosmic significance of hanging ten, but he's also tempted by the flashier stunts of the younger surf crowd. Oh, and the Arizona kid also gets romantic with the prettiest girl on Oahu (Nia Peeples), which precipitates trouble with her resentful native family. If the story's no winner, the surfing action is excellent, with many real-life surfers contributing their talents. For shredders, a guilty pleasure. --Robert Horton Amazon.com

Boy wins some C-Grade local surf comp. Wins ticket to Hawaii. Gets all his stuff knocked off by locals. Meets big time shaper. Gets taken in. Learns the real meaning of surfing. Enters big comp. Wins the girl. Sounds lame, but it's quite a good movie. Lots of name surfers play various parts, including Gerry Lopez, Laird Hamilton, Occy. Doesn't do much for the interaction between islanders and main-landers. April 6, 2008

A great cult classic. I highly recommend to anyone who loves to surf. I hadn't seen this movie in probably 15 years and after a trip to Maui it was number one on my list. I couldn't believe Laird Hamilton was Burkhart, Hilarious!!! And Gerry Lopez as the Hui leader. It doesn't get any better than that. Great film, Great cast, Love it. February 13, 2008

IMO it's a pretty cheesy 80's movie, but for some reason I always liked it. It has some pretty rough acting at times, but I just laugh. I used to have an old VHS copy, but haven't owned a VCR in 10 years. I'm glad to have found it on DVD, and am even happier to have it back in my collection. February 9, 2008

For the surfers out there, this is an all time classic movie. If you can't quote lines from this, get on it! It's a great flick from back in the 80's and totally entertaining. January 24, 2008
