rating: 5 The Victorians weren't as uptight as you think
This is one of my favorite movies. A great cast takes full advantage of every wonderful sentence of Oscar Wilde's dialogue. The decor is splendid, the actors perfectly chosen and the net result is a better performance than you will ever see on a stage. The play is one of the greatest comedies in the English language: It is a joy to watch in this extraordinary film. If you do not have it already whatever is keeping you from buying it? This you will want to see many times over and over (we watch it several times a year) April 29, 2008

rating: 5 Fun!
Well done interpretation of Wilde's play...without too much of our modern goop and gunk to get in the way. April 6, 2008

rating: 5 Very funny
I wasn't sure at first about this movie when I read the info. I'm so glad I got it, because this movie is so funny. The whole family loved it! March 28, 2008

rating: 5 Excellent film, classic at its best.
I am a great fan of films from classic english literature.
The Importance of Being Ernest has been done several times however this is my favorite.
The casting is exquisite and nearly perfect. The direction, the dialog is wonderful.
Very humorous in a dry english way which I particularly enjoy.
Refreshing to leave contemporary films with obscenities, sexual situationa and violence to view a formal gentler time of life.
Wonderful film for children especially in these times of relaxed manners , to have an example of how people used to act towards each other and react to controversial situations.
I highly recommend this film for everyone of all ages. March 25, 2008

rating: 3 Wish I'd loved it...
I've loved Oscar Wilde for as long as i can remember. I wrote my senior thesis on him and have seen every version of every Wilde play I can manage. One thing that has bothered me about every Oscar Wilde play put to film so far is how dry and flat they portray his work. His plays are light hearted and fun, not serious and boring. I was hoping this film with its impressive cast would finally get it right. Nope. I will say it is better than most but Rupert Everrett comes off as creepy (my 7 year old niece ran from the room) and mumbles most of his lines. This movie does attempt some of the goofy spirit of the play but it often comes off as dark. It has all sorts of weird accents like hot air balloons or tattoos that I like but may bother some people. It definitely is not period accurate if you care about such things. The movie does get better as it goes and picks up the pace. If you like Oscar Wilde or movies with Colin Firth then you might love this movie. If you do not like such things you may be hopelessly lost and confused by this movie. It's ok but could easily be better and by all rights should be better with such a cast. February 23, 2008
