About Escanaba in da Moonlight

"It's like Christmas with guns," is how one happy member of the Soady family describes the opening day of hunting season. Rueben Soady (Jeff Daniels) is on the verge of becoming the oldest member of the entire line of Soady men to have never shot a buck. To change his luck, Rueben tries to convince his father and brother to change some of the time-honored rituals of their annual hunting pilgrimage, but this seems to set off a series of uncanny incidents involving UFOs, cards, backwoods whiskey, flatulence, and possession by native spirits. Escanaba in da Moonlight is a comic homage to hunting in upstate Michigan, written and directed by star Daniels. It's not for everyone--vegetarians, among others, will find its blithe celebration of deer hunting repugnant--but venison eaters may find Escanaba's offbeat Midwest humor entertaining. --Bret Fetzer Amazon.com

rating: 4 QuoteWorth saving up forQuote
There are a few classic lines stemming from supposive family quotes of the Sode`s. Dang do we ever relish the 90 mins play time of this movie. There are a few scene's where we go...huh?!?! But on the whole it is funny and quite endearing. Stemming from roots that are big on hunting and especially fishing bagging a buck is well and truely understood in my domain. April 7, 2008

rating: 3 QuoteStupidest Funny Movie I Ever Bought as a GiftQuote
I bought this as a gift when asked for by title. Glad I didn't buy one for me! It's that stupid Michigan "U-per" humor that you just have to understand to get. If you are a "U-per" or know what one if, you'll probably get this movie's humor. I bought it for someone else and she loved it?!? If you are asked to buy it and you do, you might be a hero, or a fool. Either way, if they ask for it by name, it's not your fault. April 5, 2008

This is a must if you have ever spent time in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. Truly fun!! January 15, 2008

Reminds me of my own Deer camp in upper michigan. It is like "the Yupers" in movie form. Very creative use of fart humer. December 12, 2007

rating: 5 QuoteA tall tale within a tall taleQuote
In order to really understand this movie one has to realize that it is a tale tale within a tall tale. The patriach of the Soady clan is telling a tall tale about how his son Rueben (The Buckless Yooper) finally bagged his first buck. Woven into his narrative are a series of other tall tales so things tend to get really strange. But if you know tall tales, especially those told by beer-swilling hunters at deer camp you'll understand this movie-- it's a laugh riot! The crude potty humor, the put downs, the superstitions, the annoyance with the ever-present DNR are all dead-on deer camp staples, although I suspect you have to be from the upper mid-west to truly understand what it's all about.
