I was just browsing through movies and I saw that this movie was rated four stars. I cannot begin to tell you how shocked I was. This is hands down the absolute worst movie I have ever see in my entire life. I watched this several years ago with a large group of friends and family. At the end, we were all left scratching our heads and saying "are you kidding me?" This is the movie that we now compare all others too. If any of us dislike a movie we say "We'll at least it was better than Cabin Boy." Do not waste your time on this movie. The acting is terrible. The story/plot line is completely ridiculous. Not funny ridiculous, just stupid and pointless to the extent that it is annoying to watch. The filming itself is what you would expect from a B movie. I find that I am becoming irritated again just thinking about it. Not suitable for children either because there is one part where the star goes into a cave and has sex with this multi-armed thing. I wish I could offer more details but I have attempted to block as much of this move out of my mind as possible. I cannot emphasize enough how horrendous this movie is. If you choose to watch it you will likely think "wow, there's two hours of my life I will never get back" and then mourn. April 12, 2008

Ya gotta love this. I mean, really. Just the short scene with David Letterman (uncredited) alone is worth it. "Wouldja like to buy a monkey?" This is one of my all-time favorite comedy lines in any movie. You watch Dave and Chris do the back and forth thing and I promise if you don't tinkle in your trousers from guffawing, I will personally send you a Laugh-A-Gram. (OK, maybe not, but I mean, seriously. This is VERY funny stuff.)

Chris casts himself perfectly as an obnoxious "fancy lad" in some snobby boarding school, complete with wig, short pants, shiny shoes, and upper crustean attitude that, right from the beginning, is ripe for complete hilarity. When his dad (whom we finally see near the end of the film, and played by Chris' real-life father, Ray Elliot, of the famous Bob and Ray duo from years ago) leaves him a big chunka inheritance dough, he has to take a fancy ship to sail to Hawaii to claim it.

Unfortunately, owing to his doofish intellect, he boards the wrong ship and is confronted by the sorriest bunch of sea dogs in the known universe, played for broad laughs by Brion James, Brian Doyle-Murray (Bill Murray's bro), James Gammon, and Rich Brinkley as the Cap. Ricki Lake is the silent bowsprit maiden wooden ornament kinda thing; the ship's name--wouldncha know it?--is the Filthy Whore. Groan.

Lots of really funny stuff here and some nifty cameos and smaller roles--by Anne Magnuson, Mike Starr, Russ Tamblyn (formerly of West Side Story), a walking iceberg, and a flying cupcake. Don't ask.

There's even a love story, and you also get to see Chris fight a giant shoe salesman. Yep, that's right.

Whenever I just HAVE to laugh, I put this one on. Works every time. Guaranteed. November 24, 2007

If you consider yourself a fan of Elliot and haven't seen this film, then you, sir, are indeed NOT a true fan! Pull up your pants, stop licking your empty bowl of cereal and make it your first priority to see this movie immediately! February 8, 2007

Ok, first of all, David Letterman's in it. Not for very long, but long enough to make your sides hurt, and that's at the beginning. If you like sarcastic humor and a little fantasy, this is definitely the movie for you. January 11, 2007

Am I like the only one who likes this film, yet people always seem to flock to the latest lousy Will Ferrell opus in droves? While "Cabin Boy" is VERY retarded, it has made me laugh heartily on repeated viewings. I guess it all depends on your tolerance of Chris Elliott. Understandably not the most handsome of people, and maybe that's the key as to why I like it and others don't. People tolerate Ferrell and Sandler and their antics because they are reasonably good looking, but I just go for the humor and execution of it more than looks. I can't really explain it. It's kind of the "Three Stooges" school of comedy and they CERTAINLY weren't good looking, especially Shemp!

And any film with David Letterman back in his funny days can't be all bad..."You wanna buy a monkey?"

Upon writing this, I read some of the other reviews on Amazon and was surprised that I am indeed not alone, but everyone has mentioned that this film is kind of a "guilty pleasure" and that many will not "get it". I don't care, I love it!! August 17, 2006
