About 1776

The hit Broadway musical by Peter Stone and Sherman Edwards became the basis for this 1972 film about America's first congress and the nation's declaration of independence from Britain. Most of the original cast members are aboard, including William Daniels as John Adams. The film is a little stodgy and moves stiffly from scene to scene--the adaptation to the screen is not a smooth success. But it is nonetheless captivating, considering that so few films have dealt directly with America's birth. Directed by Peter H. Hunt. --Tom Keogh Amazon.com

Restored is right. I was so disappointed when the VHS version came out and was so poorly edited, yuck. Now with the innovation of the DVD, we have a beautiful, well crafted version of one of my favorite movies! YEAH! A must see for everyone aged 12 and up! May 11, 2008

rating: 5 Excellent movie!
I love this movie! The story line, the actors, the music are all excellent! This movie/play was created during the time when the Vietnam War was slowly coming toward an end.

The songs compliment the political atmosphere in that era, and they certainly fit in today with what has been going on in D.C. for the past eight years. Yes, I'm including both Congress and the White House, "Piddle, twiddle, and resolve, not one thing is ever solved" fits what has been going on with Democrats and Republicans to a 'T'.

Speaking of "Piddle, twiddle, and resolve" the only disappointment I have with this DVD is that the diector didn't include the full version of the song. You can find the full version on the CD of "1776" but not on this DVD.

Other than that, excellent movie! April 19, 2008

rating: 5 A Must See for Americans-and those interested in American History
This movie is a terrific portrayal of America's founding fathers. The historical significance is apparent and well done, not to mention historical correct. The actors do an amazing job and they are very entertaining! April 17, 2008

rating: 3 Okay movie
For the most part, I rate this movie high on the history it presents. William Daniels is great as John Adams and Frank Da Silva is a hoot as Benjamin Franklin. I really like the scenes that take place in the Continental Congress - lots of conflict, arguing and arrogant attitudes. However I think the songs are weak and completely unmemorable. For a musical, this (to me) is unforgivable. Unfortunately, the most powerful song is the one sung by the Thomas Jefferson character about the evils of slavery and those that propagate it - what a joke! Knowing what we know of the hypocritical slaver Jefferson, this song is nothing more than an insulting farce! Also, if you're thinking of letting your children watch this be aware of the fact that there is quite a bit of swearing as well as some sexual references and innuendos. The Director's cut that I borrowed from the library does feature wide screen, if not letterbox, format. I'd never call this a classic but it's okay to watch once. April 12, 2008
