This one gets better even after several viewings...subtle, enchanting, redemptive, dream-like...the elements all fit together to render a beautiful and touching tale. The other reviewers have covered much of the story already. Great film!
July 10, 2008 | | Unraveling the Hidden Connections Between the Princess and the Warrior. | |
The Princess and the Warrior (Der Krieger und die Kaiserin) (2000) reunites German director Tom Tykwer with actress Franka Potente from the 1988 film Run Lola Run ((Lola rennt), a film that established Tykwer as a true artist and Potente as a leading actress. Like Run Lola Run, The Princess and the Warrior is a rare artistic experience in film, and much like the films of acclaimed Polish director Krzysztof Kieaelowski (The Decalogue; The Double Life of Veronique), the film explores the premise that there are patterns in life connecting some people. Set in Wuppertal, Germany, the film tells the story of a sweet-natured psychiatric nurse, Sissi (Potente), and a bank robber named Bodo (Benno Furmann in his film debut), whose lives intersect following an accident, in which Bodo saves Sissi's life after she is run over by a truck. After Bodo disappears, Sissi's near-death experience convinces her that she has met the love of her life, though Bodo is convinced he is not that man. Bodo has never fully recovered from his wife's suicide. Sissi dreams that they are as intimately interconnected as "brother and sister, father and mother, husband and wife." The film's dénouement is nothing less than astonishing. This film will appeal to anyone who enjoyed Run Lola Run.

March 29, 2008This movie was recomended to me by a very close friend. This DVD is a great way to watch it.
I'd always wondered if there wasn't something new in the world like Run Lola Run, yet to be discovered. It's a very powerful love story about two broken people, and how they put it all together. It's quite powerful, heavy with the ripe of fruit of metaphor.
February 25, 2008I was not expecting RLR, but the pace needed to increase by about 50% - it was unnecessarily slow. I enjoy these darker films and the story was enjoyable, but the core plot was unoriginal with a few fun twists. The Princess and the Warrior was like the polar opposite of current overhappy, overacting cheesy Hollywood films. It was so much so that often times it felt they story was trying to delve too far into depressing characterizations that I found it having the same effect on me as disposable Hollywood films - losing touch with the characters. I enjoyed it though. Acting was good, the sets (and Franka) were gorgeous and the masterful piece at the end was worth half a star in itself. 3.5/5 stars.
P.S. I love you Franka!
